Золотой осёл in short
The Golden Asse follows a young man who loves marvels and pays for it. Lucius travels to Thessaly, a land of witches, flirts with a clever maid, and tries to become a bird. Instead he becomes a donkey, loses his voice and his rank, and is passed from robbers to priests, bakers, gardeners, and soldiers.
What Золотой осёл is about
Imagine rubbing a magic ointment on your skin, hoping to grow wings, and feeling your fingers harden into hooves. That is the fate of Lucius, a young man of good family who cannot stop poking into secrets. His body becomes a donkey, but his mind stays human, so he understands everything people say in front of him.
The Golden Asse is a Latin novel by Apuleius, a writer from North Africa trained in philosophy and public speaking. Written in the second century, it is the only Roman novel that survives complete. It mixes road adventure, bawdy comedy, witches, robbers, and tales told inside the tale. You will watch one man's curiosity throw him from guest to beast of burden.
Для кого. This is for readers who love a wild adventure with a sly narrator, fans of fairy tales and myths, and anyone curious about daily life in the Roman world.

A road in Thessaly fills Lucius with witch stories
Lucius rides into Thessaly on business, a region famous for witches who can turn rivers backward and change men into animals. On the road he overhears two travellers arguing. One laughs at the other for telling lies, and Lucius, hungry for wonders, begs to hear the story.
The teller is Aristomenus, a merchant who buys honey and cheese. He found his old friend Socrates in rags, robbed on the road and taken in by a wine seller named Meroe. She is a witch who has turned a former lover into a beaver and a rival innkeeper into a frog. That night two witches burst into the friends' barred room. Aristomenus hides under his collapsing bed and watches them drive a sword into the throat of the sleeping Socrates.
In the morning Socrates looks well, and Aristomenus decides it was a drunken dream. Then Socrates kneels to drink at a stream, and the truth appears at his throat. The tale is horrible and comic at once, and that mix is the flavour of the whole book.
Wonders sound like lies until they land on your own doorstep.
