Разводчики микробов in short

The Germ Growers follows two Oxford friends from a Welsh childhood legend to the heart of Australia. A cruel young man disappears under a strange shadow, a plague is stopped, and years later Bob and Jack join a telegraph survey, follow a loyal guide, and are left alone when a tribe runs from a hill. The hill hides a valley of flying cars, an Italian chemist who is more than he seems, and beds in which germs are made deadly.

What Разводчики микробов is about

What would you think if a shadow fell across the grass from a cloud that was not there, on the very morning a man you knew walked away and was never seen again? Bob watches two sharp shadows slide over the Welsh ground and vanish.

Robert Potter, who died in 1908, tells this Victorian adventure as the joint memoir of two friends, Bob Easterley and Jack Wilbraham. They fear nobody will believe them, so they write it down.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you like Victorian adventure, unmapped country, hidden science and friendships tested by danger. It suits listeners who enjoy a narrator thinking aloud about good and evil.

A vanished man and two strange shadows

Bob grows up in Penruddock, a Welsh coastal parish full of old legends. In many of them a bold, cold-hearted person vanishes without a trace, and a cloud or an invisible carriage with a shadow is seen in the sky. Bob enjoys them because they mix doubt with wonder.

He thinks he sees such a person in James Redpath, a handsome young man whom girls shrink from. Redpath likes to frighten children and hurt cats and dogs.

Months later Bob dozes by the sea, wakes in broad daylight and finds two sharply shaped shadows on the grass, with not a cloud in the sky. They slide together and disappear. Redpath is never seen again in Wales or England. The village thinks he fell from the cliffs, but Bob knows he walked inland and dares not link his disappearance to the shadows.

A cruel man, a cloudless sky and a shadow with no owner begin a mystery that the whole story answers.

Вопросы о книге Разводчики микробов

What is The Germ Growers about?

Two young Englishmen, Bob Easterley and Jack Wilbraham, leave a telegraph survey in Australia to follow an Aboriginal guide. They find a hidden valley of flying cars, led by a man named Davelli, where germs are bred to harm people.

Who is Niccolo Davelli in The Germ Growers?

He is the courteous master of the hidden valley, who says he was once a chemist and engineer in Italy. He speaks perfect but foreign English and wants Easterley to join his work, using offers of knowledge and power.

Is The Germ Growers a true story?

It is a work of fiction, first published by Robert Potter in the Victorian era. It is presented as the joint memoir of two friends, and uses real places such as Adelaide, Port Darwin, Daly Waters and Gippsland as its setting.

What do the shadows mean in The Germ Growers?

They are shadows of invisible flying cars, seen first on a Welsh cliff and again in Australia. They signal a hidden power that moves overhead, and they connect Bob's boyhood to the valley he later finds.

What is the main message of The Germ Growers?

The story says that the will is the real battleground. Knowledge is tempting, but a person who trades conscience for power loses freedom, while loyalty and prayer can protect the will even in great danger.
