Садовник in short
The Gardener moves in one broad curve. It begins with a servant who asks to tend a queen's garden, then follows love through shyness, village glimpses, teasing, doubt, joy, parting and loss. Along the way, the poems keep saying that love cannot be fully known, that grasping spoils it, and that short lives make it precious.
What Садовник is about
What happens when a servant walks up to a queen after her assembly ends and asks only to tend her flowers? That small scene opens The Gardener. It sets the mood for all that follows: service, devotion, and a love that asks for little and gives all.
Rabindranath Tagore, the Bengali poet who died in 1941, dedicated this book to W. B. Yeats. It holds eighty-five short lyrics in many voices. Lovers speak, and so do brides, travelers, villagers, and a madman who hunts for a magic stone. The early poems are bright with courtship, the middle ones turn to doubt and parting, and the last look toward death, the earth, and God.
Для кого. Readers who enjoy short lyric poems about love and nature will love this collection, as will those drawn to village life, quiet spiritual questions, and lasting images of birds, rivers, lamps and flowers.

A servant asks to become the gardener
The book opens with a short play of two voices. A servant comes to a queen after her court has emptied and asks for work. He offers to give up his swords and lances and all his conquests in far-off courts. All he wants is to be the gardener of her flower garden.
The queen finds this foolish, so he explains his duties. He will keep the morning path fresh, swing her among the branches of the saptaparna tree, and fill her bedside lamp with scented oil. His reward is small and tender. He asks to slip flower chains over her wrists and kiss away any speck of dust from her feet. She grants his wish.
Tagore sets the terms of the whole book in this scene. The lover is a servant, and love is paid for in closeness and not in power. The gardener tends beauty and never owns it.
The next poems widen the frame. A poet with gray hair is asked whether he hears a message from the afterlife. He answers that he is listening for young hearts in the village who may need a song. In another poem he hauls shining things from the sea and lays them at his love's feet, but she sees no use in them. Ashamed, he throws them into the street, and travelers carry them off to distant lands.
The poet serves love and life by staying open to everyone who passes.
