Первые люди на Луне in short

The First Men in the Moon follows two very different men. Bedford wants money and Cavor wants knowledge, and a metal that blocks gravity brings them together. After an accident nearly strips the Earth of air, they build a sphere and fly to the moon.

What Первые люди на Луне is about

What would you do if a stranger on a muddy footpath told you he could switch off gravity? Mr. Bedford, a bankrupt, has come to the quiet village of Lympne to write a play. He spends his evenings watching a short, round man pace past his window, humming like a dynamo.

The First Men in the Moon is a novel by H. G. Wells. Bedford tells the story himself, and he is frank about his money troubles and his greed. His neighbour Mr. Cavor is a scientist who cares for nothing but knowing. Together they make a substance that blocks gravity, coat a sphere with it, and fly to the moon.

Для кого. Readers who love early science fiction, voyages into the unknown, comic partnerships, and imaginary worlds drawn with careful detail.

The story in 11 parts

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A bankrupt writer meets a humming scientist

Mr. Bedford arrives at Lympne because he thinks it is the dullest place in England. He has failed in business, a creditor is chasing him, and he hopes to rescue himself by finishing a play.

Then a strange figure begins to pass his window each evening. He is Mr. Cavor, and he has never noticed his own humming. Bedford lets him come each afternoon to talk through his work.

Cavor explains his aim. He is searching for a substance that blocks gravity the way metal blocks light. Bedford sees at once what that could mean for weapons, ships and trade. Cavor has thought only of the theory. Bedford drops the play and declares himself a partner.

Curiosity and hunger for profit can fit together very neatly, until the stakes grow.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • Mr. Bedford A bankrupt would-be playwright who tells the story, brave when angry, nervous when calm, and always hoping to turn Cavor's discovery into money.
  • Mr. Cavor An absent-minded scientist who hums when he thinks, cares only for knowledge, and invents the metal that blocks gravity.
  • Gibbs A joiner and one of Cavor's three assistants, whose quarrel over the furnace helps set off the first accident.
  • Spargus A former gardener who serves as Cavor's cook and joins in the argument about who should tend the furnace.
  • The Selenites The insect-like inhabitants of the hollow moon, herding mooncalves and working machines, who have never met anyone like these two visitors.
  • The Grand Lunar The ruler of the moon, a vast brain on a throne, who wants to learn about Earth and why men came.

How it ends (spoiler)

Bedford is trapped when the night freezes the crater, but he reaches the sphere and flies back to Earth, landing in the sea off Littlestone. A boy meddles with the sphere and vanishes into space, leaving Bedford with only the gold. Later he receives radio messages from Cavor, who lives among the Selenites. Cavor speaks of war to the Grand Lunar, and his interrupted account is followed a week later by one last message.

Вопросы о книге Первые люди на Луне

What is The First Men in the Moon about?

It follows Mr. Bedford, a bankrupt playwright, and Mr. Cavor, a scientist, who make a metal that blocks gravity. They build a sphere, fly to the moon, and find a living world beneath its surface.

Who are the Selenites?

Selenites is the name given to the intelligent beings of the moon. They look like upright insects, live in caverns, herd huge creatures called mooncalves, and are made in many different forms for different tasks.

What is Cavorite?

Cavorite is the metal alloy Cavor invents, named after him. It blocks the pull of gravity, so anything coated with it floats freely and can be steered by opening and closing shutters.

When was The First Men in the Moon written?

H. G. Wells wrote it in the early years of the twentieth century. It is fiction, not a true story, combining the moon's real lower gravity with an imagined breathable atmosphere.

Is The First Men in the Moon easy to read?

It is told in a lively first person voice with plenty of humour and action. Short chapters, vivid scenes and clear explanations of the science make it welcoming for readers of many ages.
