Опера нищих in short

The Beggar's Opera tells of a London where crime is a trade and justice is a price list. Peachum and Lockit buy, sell, and hang thieves according to what each is worth. Macheath, the charming highwayman, is caught between the families that would profit from his death and the two women who each believe themselves his wife.

What Опера нищих is about

What happens when a man who sells stolen watches by day also sells his own daughter's husband to the hangman? In John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, first staged in 1728, a London receiver of stolen goods named Peachum keeps a ledger of thieves. He decides which of them live and which of them hang, according to what each is worth to him.

Gay built the play as a ballad opera, with spoken scenes and sixty-eight songs set to tunes the audience already knew. You get the whole story, from the ledger to the condemned cell. You meet the charming highwayman Macheath, the two women who each claim to be his wife, and the two fathers who trade in his life.

Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy sharp satire, stage comedy, songs that mock the powerful, crime stories with a clever villain, and the rowdy streets of eighteenth century London.

The story in 8 parts

Peachum runs crime like a trading business

The play opens in Peachum's house, where he sits over a large account book. He is a receiver of stolen goods and also a thief-taker. He buys what thieves steal, and he turns thieves in for a reward of forty pounds a head. He decides who gets protection and who goes to the gallows.

His first song says that every profession calls every other one a rogue. The priest calls the lawyer a cheat, and the lawyer calls the priest a scoundrel. Peachum thinks his own trade is as honest as any.

His young helper Filch brings news. Tom Gagg has been found guilty, and Peachum writes his name in the book without pity, because Tom brought in too little. Betty Sly will be saved from transportation, since she is still worth money to him. Then Peachum reads his list of the gang like a manager checking stock. Crook-fingered Jack has brought in watches, snuffboxes, and handkerchiefs, so he earns praise.

His wife is as ready as he is to profit from death. Murder, Peachum tells her, is a fashionable crime, and a gentleman with money can talk a jury into calling it manslaughter.

In this London, crime is simply a business with a ledger and a price for every head.

How it ends (spoiler)

Macheath is led out to be hanged, and the beggar says justice demands it. The player objects that an opera must end happily. The beggar gives way and has the crowd shout for a reprieve. Macheath is brought back, and he admits he really did marry Polly. The play closes with a dance and a song, and the warning that today's wretch may be happy tomorrow.

Вопросы о книге Опера нищих

What is The Beggar's Opera about?

It follows the highwayman Macheath, who secretly marries Polly Peachum. Her father, a dealer in stolen goods, plots to have him hanged for the reward, and Macheath is also pursued by Lucy Lockit, who claims him too.

Who wrote The Beggar's Opera and when was it first staged?

John Gay wrote it, and it was first staged in London in 1728. He built it as a ballad opera, mixing spoken scenes with songs set to tunes the audience already knew.

Why is it called a ballad opera?

Because its songs use popular ballad tunes instead of new music by a composer. It copies the shape of grand opera but sets everyday words to street melodies, which gives it a comic edge.

Is The Beggar's Opera easy to follow?

Yes, in the sense that matters: the plot is clear and moves from scene to scene. The dialogue is quick and witty, and the songs give each mood a neat summary, so the story is easy to follow.

What is the main message of The Beggar's Opera?

Gay shows that thieves and gentlemen behave alike, and that money rules love, law, and friendship. The beggar who frames the play says the poor have the same vices as the rich.
