The Beast in the Jungle follows John Marcher from a country house to a London drawing room and a cemetery. He believes since boyhood that a rare and terrible event is waiting for him. He confides this to May Bartram, who promises to watch with him, and the two grow old in that shared vigil.

A forgotten meeting at Weatherend
The story opens on an October afternoon at Weatherend, a grand country house that visitors come to admire. John Marcher has come with a party of friends. The others bend over cabinets, but Marcher drifts off alone through the great rooms.
At lunch he notices a woman whose face troubles him in a pleasant way. Her name is May Bartram. Later the two end up alone in a room, and Marcher rushes to show off. He tells her he met her years ago in Rome and remembers everything.
May lets him pour out his memories, then corrects him with quiet amusement. It was Naples, not Rome. Even the thunderstorm happened at Pompeii. Every correction proves how little he kept. The meeting seems about to fail. Then May decides to rescue it, and she asks him about something he told her on a hot day at Sorrento.
A first meeting can turn on a single question about the one thing a man has forgotten he ever said.

How it ends (spoiler)
Years after May's death, Marcher sees a stranger in the cemetery whose face is ravaged by grief for a lost loved one. Marcher understands in a rush that he has never felt such passion. May loved him, and she was what he missed. The Beast was his own blindness, the waiting that kept him from loving her. In horror he throws himself facedown on her tomb.
