Альгамбра in short

Irving builds the book in a loose circle. He arrives in Granada by a road full of bandits and cheerful strangers, moves into the Alhambra as a lodger, and then lets the palace speak through its history, its people and its legends. The facts are mixed with fun, and he says plainly when a favorite story is only a tale.

What Альгамбра is about

Imagine being handed the keys to a royal palace. A traveler climbs the hill above Granada, calls on the governor, and learns that the apartments of the last Moorish king are his, if he can strike a bargain with the housekeeper. That is what happens to Washington Irving in 1829.

The Alhambra is his record of the months that followed. Irving, an American writer who later served as his country's minister to Spain, made notes while living in the fortress. The book blends travel writing, portraits of the people among the ruins, histories of Moorish kings, and legends from guides and old chronicles.

Для кого. Readers who love places with a past, armchair travelers, fans of Moorish history, and anyone who enjoys a warm, humorous legend of buried gold and enchanted princesses.

The 10 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

The road to Granada runs through robber country

Irving opens with the journey, not the palace. He and a friend ride from Seville to Granada through mountains where crosses by the road mark murders. They hire horses and a cheerful young guide, and they nickname him Sancho, after the squire of Don Quixote.

Sancho is full of proverbs, and his saddlebags seem to refill themselves. The road offers a parade of types: a boastful patrol commander, an old shepherd who spins a tale of buried Moorish gold, and swaggering smugglers at Loxa.

Irving insists this is the right way to travel. He mixes with every class and treats the roughest inn as an enchanted castle. Spain is stern and bare, yet its people are proud and poetic even in rags.

Travel with good humor and every rough road becomes part of the story.

Вопросы о книге Альгамбра

What is The Alhambra by Washington Irving about?

It is a travel memoir about Irving's stay in the Alhambra palace in Granada in 1829. It describes the journey there, the people who live in the fortress, Moorish history and a set of legends about treasure, love and ghosts.

Are the stories in The Alhambra true?

The travel scenes and the portraits of Mateo, Dolores and Tia Antonia come from real experience, and the history comes from chronicles. The legends are local folk tales that Irving gathered and shaped, and he treats them as tales rather than facts.

Who is Mateo Ximenes in The Alhambra?

Mateo is a poor, talkative resident of the fortress who calls himself a son of the Alhambra. He becomes Irving's guide and squire, and he supplies many of the legends he learned from his grandfather, the tailor.

What do the hand and key on the Gate of Justice mean?

Scholars see the hand as a symbol of doctrine and the key as faith or power. Mateo has a more magical version, in which the hand will one day grasp the key and bring the whole fortress down.

Is The Alhambra easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that it comes in short, self-contained chapters. Each sketch or legend can be read on its own, and Irving's warm, humorous voice carries the reader from the road to the palace and its stories.
