Сказки Шекспира in short

Charles and Mary Lamb keep Shakespeare's own words whenever they can, and they add only what is needed to join the scenes. The tales move from comedies and romances with magic and disguises into jealousy, ambition and family feud. You keep a map of Shakespeare's world, from Prospero and Puck to Portia, Lear and Hamlet.

What Сказки Шекспира is about

What would it take to hand Shakespeare to a child? Charles Lamb and his sister Mary Lamb answered by turning twenty of the plays into short prose tales.

The Lambs wrote these tales as a first taste of the plays. They kept Shakespeare's own words wherever they could.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy fairy tales and old stories will love this collection, as will those eager to meet Shakespeare's best-known plots. It also suits anyone who likes reading aloud to children.

The story in 10 parts

The Lambs keep Shakespeare's own words

Charles Lamb and Mary Lamb wrote these tales for young readers who could not yet take on the plays. Their preface states the rule they followed. Wherever possible, the words on the page are Shakespeare's own.

When they had to add words to join the scenes into stories, they chose carefully. They avoided words that entered the language after his time.

In the comedies, his speech is hard to turn into narration, so those tales lean on dialogue. In the tragedies, his words often pass straight into the narration. The Lambs hope readers will wish for the day when they may read the plays whole.

Each tale works like a doorway.

The book is a first meeting with Shakespeare, never a replacement for the plays.
