Сказания Йокаи in short

Taken together, the nine tales show one habit of mind. A person or a town meets a threat, and the winner is whoever sees the situation most clearly, often with a joke or a prayer. Dobozy bluffs a pasha, a countess dances with a robber, a sultan listens for the words that will convict a lawyer, and a pastor offers books against a curse.

What Сказания Йокаи is about

What would you do if a Turkish pasha rode up to your town with a cannon at every gate, and your governor answered by promising to burn the place down first? That is how the first story in Tales from Jókai begins.

Mór Jókai, born in 1825 and dead in 1904, was Hungary's most prolific storyteller. This volume gathers nine of his shorter tales.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy campfire tales, ghost stories, comic escapades and legends of old Europe will find nine lively journeys here, most with a lesson about pride, faith or justice.

The story in 10 parts

A town bluffs a pasha at Debreczen

Debreczen has no walls, no moat and no drawbridge. Its defense is twelve crumbling towers with thatched roofs, and a stork's nest sits on top of each one. The hot-tempered governor Stephen Dobozy answers the Pasha's latest threat with a single line, let him come if he likes.

The Pasha arrives at dawn with a cannon aimed at every gate. The women are already on the road, valuables have been thrown into the wells, and the town will burn the moment the enemy attacks. The Pasha sees that a burnt Debreczen would be worth nothing to him, so he backs down and even praises the governor.

But his grace is only a pretense. He sends five hundred horsemen to wait in the forest for the wagons full of women. Then a dark storm gathers behind them.

A town that is ready to lose everything can stand against an enemy who is willing to lose only a little.
