Сьюзен Б. Энтони in short

This biography follows one woman from a Quaker mill town to the center of a national movement. Susan B. Anthony learns equality at home, finds her voice in temperance halls, works in the antislavery cause, and then spends decades pressing for the vote.

What Сьюзен Б. Энтони is about

What happens when a woman walks into a barbershop in 1872 and asks to be put on the voting list? In Rochester, New York, the inspectors argue, then give way. Susan B. Anthony casts her ballot, and within weeks a deputy marshal arrives at her door with an arrest warrant.

This biography by Alma Lutz follows Anthony from a Quaker mill family in Massachusetts to her last public words in her eighties. Lutz builds it on Anthony's own diaries and letters, so you hear her doubts, her humor and her anger. You also meet the circle around her, from Stanton and Douglass to Catt.

Для кого. Readers drawn to American history, biography and struggles for rights will enjoy this book. It suits those curious about abolition, temperance, labor and voting, and those who love portraits of friendship and courage.

A Quaker mill girl asks why

Susan B. Anthony is born on February 15, 1820, near Adams, Massachusetts. Her father, Daniel Anthony, is a Quaker who builds a cotton mill beside a brook. Her mother cooks and cleans for eleven millworkers while raising three small daughters.

At eleven, Susan watches a skilled weaver fix tangled yarn again and again, while a man is the overseer. She asks her father why the weaver is not made overseer. He says it would never do to have a woman in that job, and Susan is not satisfied.

Quaker belief gives her a different picture of women. Her grandmother sits as an elder in the meetinghouse, and an aunt preaches. After the crash of 1837 ruins her father, Susan teaches to help pay the debts, and she earns only a quarter of a male teacher's salary. Her sense of women's worth begins in the mill, the meetinghouse and the classroom.

Вопросы о книге Сьюзен Б. Энтони

What is Susan B. Anthony by Alma Lutz about?

It tells the life of the suffrage pioneer from her Quaker childhood in Massachusetts to her final years in Rochester. It covers her work in temperance, antislavery, labor and women's rights, and her long campaign for the vote.

Who are the main people in the book besides Anthony?

The most important are Elizabeth Cady Stanton, her closest friend and partner, and Lucy Stone, a rival. Others include Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Anna Howard Shaw, Carrie Chapman Catt and her sister Mary.

Why was Susan B. Anthony arrested?

In November 1872 she registered and voted in Rochester, New York, to test whether the Fourteenth Amendment gave women the vote. She was charged with voting illegally, tried in 1873, and fined one hundred dollars, which she refused to pay.

What did Anthony mean by failure is impossible?

She spoke these words at her eighty-sixth birthday gathering in Washington, as a rallying cry for the younger women who would carry on the campaign. The book presents them as her message to the movement.

Is the book based on real sources and easy to follow?

Yes, it rests on Anthony's diaries and letters, along with the History of Woman Suffrage. Lutz tells events in time order, with short scenes, direct quotations from letters, and clear portraits of the people around her.
