Испанские записки in short
Spanish Papers moves from collapse to recovery. A Gothic kingdom grows soft, a king ignores warnings and wrongs a loyal servant, and that servant opens the gate to invaders. The conquerors then quarrel and die in disgrace.
What Испанские записки is about
A king opens a sealed tower in Toledo, and a painted cloth shows him the horsemen who will end his rule. Can a kingdom fall because of one ruler's pride, one father's rage and one enchanted door?
Washington Irving gathers the old Spanish chroniclers' tales of the Muslim conquest in Spanish Papers. He wrote them in the early nineteenth century, partly at the Alhambra. He keeps the wonders, calls his pieces legends, and speaks through an imaginary monkish chronicler named Fray Antonio Agapida. You get a fast tour of seven centuries.
Для кого. Readers who love castles, sieges, ballads and chivalry, and anyone curious about how Spain remembers the Moors and the Goths.

Irving keeps the marvels in Spanish history
Irving opens with a plain admission about his sources. The conquest of Spain left its motives and characters clouded. Writers on both sides piled fancy onto fact, and the earliest chronicles come from pious monks or Arab storytellers.
He compares the problem to the fall of Troy. Poetry has grown so tightly around every fact that pulling it off would leave a bare skeleton. So he casts his material as legends, and he says every marvel can be found in the old chroniclers.
Omens, ghosts, saints on white horses and enchanted towers stand beside battles and treaties. Fray Antonio Agapida, the pious friar who narrates, believes nearly everything and scolds the doubters. Irving holds that Spaniards are proud, boastful and brave, and that daring carries them to feats careful planning never could.
The takeaway: expect history as Spain remembered it, with its wonders left in and its facts still standing.
