Sophist in short
The Sophist asks what a sophist is and finds that the answer rests on deeper questions about being, not-being and falsehood. The Stranger rehearses on the humble angler, then catches the sophist in net after net. The number of portraits shows that no single trait has yet been found.
What Sophist is about
How can anyone say something false? If a false sentence speaks about what is not, and what is not is nothing at all, then the speaker seems to say nothing. This puzzle sits at the center of the Sophist, a dialogue written by Plato in the fourth century BC, when he was an old man who had taught for decades in Athens.
Teachers for hire had grown famous in Greece for speaking on every subject, and many citizens could not tell such talk from wisdom. A visitor from Elea, known only as the Stranger, hunts the sophist with the young Theaetetus as his partner. You get a method, a hunt and a bold argument about truth, language and existence.
Для кого. You will love this dialogue if you enjoy sharp puzzles, close reasoning and the origins of logic. It suits anyone who likes watching a clever argument take shape one question at a time.

Practice the method on a small example first
The Stranger opens with a rule of craft. Before you tackle a great and slippery subject, rehearse your method on something small. He chooses the angler, a person nobody finds important, and promises the same method will later serve for the sophist.
The method is division. Start with a broad class and split it in two. Keep the half that holds your target and split again. Skill divides into making and gaining, gaining into exchange and conquest, conquest into fighting and hunting, and so on down to the hook that draws the fish up from below. Theaetetus agrees to each cut before the next is made.
The Stranger wants agreement about the thing, not only about the name. A definition is a record of the path you walked, so anyone can check each step. When a word like success or fairness confuses you, place it in a wider class and ask which cut separates it from its neighbors.
Takeaway: define a slippery thing by dividing a wide class step by step, and rehearse the method on something simple first.

Вопросы о книге Sophist
What is Plato's Sophist about?
It asks how to define a sophist, a paid teacher of clever speech. To do so, the Stranger faces the puzzle of how falsehood and not-being can exist, and works out a theory of kinds and of the sentence.
Who is the Eleatic Stranger?
He is an unnamed visitor from Elea, a follower of Parmenides and Zeno. Theodorus brings him to Socrates, and he leads the argument while the young Theaetetus answers his questions.
What does not-being mean in the Sophist?
The Stranger argues that not-being does not mean nothing or the opposite of being. It means difference. The not-beautiful, for example, is a real thing set apart from the beautiful.
Why does the dialogue start with an angler?
The Stranger wants to practice his method of division on a familiar, simple subject. Cutting a class in two, again and again, defines angling and prepares the same steps for the sophist.
Is the Sophist worth reading today?
Yes, for its clear model of definition, its warning about persuasive talk that only seems wise, and its early account of how a sentence can be true or false. The argument moves in short, answerable steps.
