Зигфрид-герой in short
The book follows Siegfried from a boy in Xanten who longs for the world to a king's equal at Worms. Along the way he wins a sword, a dragon's hoard, skin like horn, a cloak of invisibility and a cursed ring. He wakes the Valkyrie Brunhild, parts from her in anger, and later helps Gunther win her by hidden strength.
What Зигфрид-герой is about
Picture a boy of fourteen who rides in secret to a tournament of mighty knights with his visor shut, so that nobody can send him home for being too young. He lowers a spear he carved himself from a young ash tree and knocks the proud riders out of their saddles.
Who is this boy? He is Siegfried, son of King Siegmund of Xanten on the Lower Rhine. Siegfried the Hero is Rudolf Herzog's retelling of the old German legend of the Nibelungs, told in bright, ringing scenes with the pace of a ballad.
Для кого. This book suits readers who love hero tales, dragons, Valkyries and Rhine castles, and anyone who enjoys a story told at a gallop, with bold speeches and a court full of schemers.

A restless prince leaves his father's hall
The legend opens in Xanten, an old city on the Lower Rhine. King Siegmund and Queen Siegelinde have a son, and because peace follows their victories, they name him Siegfried.
Then the first conflict arrives. Siegfried begs his father to let him go out into the world. The old king answers that strength alone cannot subdue enemies, and that a wise mind turns enemies into friends. Siegfried hears only a gray-bearded man whose fighting days are over.
One stormy evening, a singer in the hall sings of the gold hoard of the dwarf king Nibelung, guarded in a mountain by the dragon Fafner. Siegfried cannot sleep. He slips out into the storm, tears up a young oak by its roots and fights a boar, a unicorn and a flaming serpent in the dark.
A young hero's courage is magnificent, but it needs the wisdom he refuses to hear.
