Укрытия, хижины и лачуги in short

Shelters, Shacks and Shanties teaches by climbing. Beard starts with a bed of balsam twigs and simple shelters, and his hatchet-only camps grow into stilt shacks before axe-built sod houses and dugouts. Before the sod houses and dugouts, he hands you the axe, with rules on felling and splitting, and later covers log cabins, latches, fireplaces and his Big Tink Pond house.

What Укрытия, хижины и лачуги is about

Picture a northern forest with an hour of light left, a hatchet on your belt and no tent. Where do you sleep? Daniel Carter Beard has an answer, and it begins with a tree he jokingly calls the mountain goose, whose twigs make a bed softer than many beds at home.

Beard finished Shelters, Shacks and Shanties in April 1914. He helped found the Boy Scouts of America, and he wrote this book for boys of all ages. The tomahawk camps need only a hatchet. The axe camps lead step by step to the log house.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy hands-on projects, camping and scouting history, tree houses and cabins, or old-fashioned know-how with sticks, bark, mud and logs.

The 8 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

Begin with a balsam bed and bark

Beard opens with sleep, not walls. The best mattress in the northern woods comes from the balsam fir. Woodsmen call it the mountain goose because its twigs do the work of feathers.

Gathering boughs has a trick to it. If you chop them, they spring back and slap you in the face. Instead, take each twig between thumb and two fingers and snap it with a twist of the wrist. String the handfuls on a green stick, the way you would string fish, and sling the load over your shoulder.

Then lay the boughs like shingles. Start at the head with the tips pointing toward it, and let each layer cover the butts of the one before. Long twigs go at the bottom and short ones on top. The same thinking guides his roofs. Cut a ring around a felled log at each end, slit the bark between the rings and pry it off whole. Lay it from the bottom up with the pieces overlapping. Boughs on a wall must point downward so that they shed rain.

Takeaway: comfort and shelter start with the materials at your feet, so learn them first.

Вопросы о книге Укрытия, хижины и лачуги

What is Shelters, Shacks and Shanties about?

It is a hands-on guide to building outdoor shelters, from bark lean-tos and stilt shacks to dugouts, tree houses and full log cabins, with chapters on axes, latches, fireplaces and roofs.

What is the difference between tomahawk camps and axe camps?

Tomahawk camps can be made with only a hatchet, using poles, boughs and bark. Axe camps need a woodsman's axe because they use heavier logs, and they lead up to log houses.

When was Shelters, Shacks and Shanties written, and for whom?

Daniel Carter Beard finished it in April 1914 at Flushing, Long Island. He wrote it for boys of all ages, scouts and scoutmasters, and for many grown outdoorsmen who asked for clear plans.

Is the book easy to follow if you are a beginner?

Yes, the projects are ordered from the simplest shelters to larger cabins, so you can start with a balsam bed and bark roof. Beard writes in a friendly, joking voice and adds small models and safety advice.

What are the Adirondack, the Pontiac and the Red Jacket?

They are camp designs. The Adirondack is an open-front lean-to, the Pontiac is Beard's own bark-shingled shelter, and the Red Jacket is a log camp with a windbreak and chimney that leads toward the log cabin.
