Тени в Замбуле in short
Shadows in Zamboula is the story of one night in a city built by Stygians and ruled by Turanians. Conan takes a cheap room in an inn at the edge of the desert, and a nomad's warning proves truer than he expected. The room is a trap, the host sells his guests to cannibals, and the night draws Conan into a struggle with a priest of the ape-god Hanuman.
What Тени в Замбуле is about
Would you sleep in a room with a bolted door if the bolt could be worked from outside? Conan, a giant barbarian from the hills of Cimmeria, is about to find out. He has sold his horse, spent most of his coin, and paid for the cheapest bed he can find in Zamboula.
Shadows in Zamboula is a Conan adventure by Robert E. Howard, the American pulp writer who died in 1936.
Для кого. You will love this tale if you enjoy swift sword-and-sorcery, cursed temples, crowded fantasy cities and a hero who relies on muscle, nerve and a quick eye.

A nomad warns Conan about the inn
The tale begins in the Sword-Makers' Bazaar of Zamboula. A wiry nomad of the Zuagir tribe clutches at the arm of Conan the Cimmerian. Conan has lived for many moons in the Zuagir tents, and the nomad calls him brother. Danger lurks in the house of Aram Baksh.
Desert men and travelers sleep at that inn and are never seen again. Aram swears they rose and went on their way. Yet goods known to belong to the missing turn up in the bazaars. No citizen of the city has ever vanished from his house. Once a Zuagir chief complained to the satrap, Jungir Khan. Soldiers found nothing, and the chief was driven from the city with curses.
Then comes the odd part. In a clump of palms at the edge of the desert there is a pit. Human bones, charred and blackened, have been found in it many times. The nomad is sure that Aram Baksh is a demon in human form.
Conan answers with amused scorn. He has no goods to steal, and he has already paid for his room. When city watchmen appear, the nomad ducks away and calls one last warning over his shoulder.
A wild rumor may be wrong in its details and still point at a real danger.

How it ends (spoiler)
Conan rides back to the inn and shuts Aram Baksh out of his own house. He tells the hungry cannibals to wait at a door in the outer wall and hands Aram to them. Conan then rides west into the desert with a sack of gold and the Star of Khorala, which he lifted while binding the unconscious satrap earlier. He knew who the pair really were all along. Behind him, the cannibal fire glows and Aram screams.
