Разведка для мальчиков in short

Scouting for Boys is a course for turning boys into capable, trustworthy people. It starts with readiness, the idea behind Mafeking and the motto Be Prepared, and then builds skill upon skill. Observation, tracking, woodcraft, camp craft and signals come first.

What Разведка для мальчиков is about

What would you do if shells were falling on a quiet country town and someone asked you to carry a message across the street? At Mafeking in 1899, boys did exactly that. They rode bicycles through fire, and the general who commanded the town never forgot them. His name was Robert Baden-Powell.

Scouting for Boys appeared in 1908 as a handbook in fortnightly parts. He wrote it for any man or boy who wants to train a patrol in good citizenship, and you get the scene and the skill behind each lesson.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you love outdoor skills, camp cooking, knots and tracks, true adventure stories and practical games, or if you teach, lead or parent young people.

The 10 key ideas

Be ready for what is possible, not probable

Baden-Powell opens with Mafeking, an ordinary little town on the open plains of South Africa. Nobody imagined anyone would attack it. It was attacked anyway, in 1899. His point is that a person must prepare for what is possible and not only for what seems probable.

About one thousand men defended the town, with women and children inside. Some townsmen handed rifles had never fired one. The lesson is plain: every boy should learn to shoot and to obey orders before trouble comes. The town's boys were drilled into a cadet corps. They carried orders and ran messages, which freed men for the firing line.

Many rode bicycles between the forts. When the author warned one boy he would be hit one day, the boy answered that he pedalled too fast to be caught. Preparation steadies the nerve, as practice does for a swimmer in cold water.

Prepare in advance, and you can act at once when the moment arrives.
