Награды и феи in short

Rewards and Fairies gathers its tales and poems around one idea. The past is not gone, because it lies under the fields, the church floors and the hedges of a Sussex farm. Puck lets Dan and Una see it.

What Награды и феи is about

What happens when two children take off their boots on Midsummer Morning? Dan and Una, brother and sister in the Sussex countryside, walk barefoot up Pook's Hill and find Puck waiting. He is the last of the People of the Hills, and he lets them see what once happened in their own fields.

Rewards and Fairies is Rudyard Kipling's second book of tales about Dan, Una and Puck. Most stories bring a visitor out of the past, and poems stand between the tales, among them the one called If. You will hear what each tale holds and what ties them together.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy history told by lively talkers, English country lanes, ships and smugglers, old crafts, and stories with deep meaning under a clear surface.

The story in 10 parts

Cold Iron and a masked queen's lady

The book opens on Midsummer Morning. Dan and Una slip out before breakfast, take off their boots, and find the old magic coming back on Pook's Hill. Puck tells them why boots matter. The nails in the soles are Cold Iron, and people who live in houses are ruled by it.

He tells of a baby boy whom he takes from a church door to the fairy Hill. Sir Huon and Lady Esclairmonde raise the Boy far from iron, yet he keeps looking toward people in houses. One night he finds a slave ring of iron in the dark, with runes cut across it. It means he must go among people and work for them. The fairies weep, because a boy cannot stay a child once the world calls him.

In Gloriana, a masked lady puts on a play about Queen Elizabeth deciding how much England must risk. The children must judge whether a ruler who sends young men to danger does wrong.

Power in these two stories always comes with a price.
