L. T. Meade wrote this story for girl readers in the late Victorian years. It follows Hester, her golden-haired sister Nan, their lively friend Annie Forest, and the Lorrimer family of the Towers, rich in pets but poor in money. You get the whole story in plain steps, from the homecoming to the arrival of Antonia, an untidy art student who sets out to change other people's fortunes.

A Summer Homecoming at the Grange
Hester Thornton stands on the drive listening for carriage wheels. Her father, Sir John, is a cold, orderly man who dislikes surprises. He tells her plainly that he dreads Nan's return. Nan is eight, and in his eyes she is noise and disorder.
Then the carriage arrives, and out springs Nan with Annie Forest, Hester's friend from school, who was not due until the next day. Nan has fluffy golden hair and a fearless belief that the world loves her. Annie is older, bright with mood and movement, and so lovely that Hester looks at her with open admiration.
Upstairs, Nan's old nurse, Mrs. Martin, lets slip that she feared Sir John might bring home a new wife. Nan hears the word stepmother and decides on the spot that she would hate one. She goes down to supper quietly, with trouble beginning to dim her eyes.
A careless word at the right moment can shape what a child expects for months.

How it ends (spoiler)
Antonia's plan works. Sir John, moved by her passionate appeal, lends Squire Lorrimer enough money on easy terms to keep the Towers. Mr. Drummond is glad to leave the bargain. The squire, restored, tells his family the news on the path to the Grange, and cries God bless Antonia. Annie confesses the matter of the ring to Mrs. Willis and is forgiven. Antonia, asked to come and be thanked, stays behind to paint dock leaves.

Вопросы о книге Алая роза и тигровая лилия
What is Red Rose and Tiger Lily about?
It follows two English families, the Thorntons of the Grange and the Lorrimers of the Towers, through a summer of picnics, a fancy-dress ball, a broken promise and bad news, while an eccentric girl named Antonia steps in to help.
Who are Red Rose and Tiger Lily in the book?
The red rose is Annie Forest, a pretty, tactful and impulsive schoolgirl. The tiger lily is Antonia Bernard Temple, an untidy, forceful art student who thinks of herself as fierce. They are two very different kinds of girl.
Do I need to read A World of Girls first?
No. The narrator briefly explains Annie Forest's earlier story, so the book can be enjoyed on its own. It continues the stories of characters from A World of Girls, but explains their background so that it stands by itself.
When was Red Rose and Tiger Lily written and is it a true story?
L. T. Meade, who died in 1914, wrote it in the Victorian era as fiction for girls. The characters and events are invented, though it shows real details of country houses, estates and middle-class life of its day.
Is Red Rose and Tiger Lily easy to read?
It has short chapters, lively dialogue and clear scenes. Each character speaks in a recognisable voice, and the plot moves through picnics, a ball and family surprises that are easy to follow.
