Rainbow Valley in short

Rainbow Valley follows two groups of children in one small Prince Edward Island village. The Blythes have a mother, a father and a safe home. The Merediths have a gentle father who lives in books and no mother at all.

What Rainbow Valley is about

What happens when a starving runaway hides in a hayloft, a minister forgets his own children's dinner, and a doctor's family shares fried trout with anyone who follows the smell? That is the spark of Rainbow Valley, a novel by L. M. Montgomery, published in 1919. Anne of Green Gables now sits in the background as a mother of six, and the children take the stage.

Montgomery was born on Prince Edward Island, and she writes its villages from the inside. She knows how a small place can be cruel and kind in the same afternoon. Her style is light and quick, with mischief beside real grief, and a faint shadow falls across the sunniest pages.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy warm village comedy, spirited children, quiet romance and old Prince Edward Island. It suits anyone who wants to watch Anne's own children grow up.

The story in 7 parts

Two families find each other in a valley

The story opens with Dr. Gilbert and Anne Blythe coming home from three months in Europe. Their children have already run to the place they love best, a wooded hollow behind the maple grove. Walter named it Rainbow Valley. It has a brook, wild cherry trees, and two entwined trees called the Tree Lovers, hung with sleigh bells.

Meanwhile Miss Cornelia walks up to Ingleside, bursting with news. The village has called a new minister, John Knox Meredith. He is learned and handsome, and he has no common sense at all. He is a widower with four children. The manse is thick with dust, and old Aunt Martha serves the same cold mutton until the children call it ditto. Miss Cornelia fears they run wild and play in the Methodist graveyard next door.

In that graveyard Jerry, Faith, Una and Carl sit on flat tombstones. They have had bread and molasses for supper, and a delicious smell drifts up from the valley. They follow it and find Jem, Walter, Nan and Di about to eat fried trout. The Blythes say there is plenty for everyone. Nobody asks about church, money or manners. They share the meal and trade secrets, and by the last trout they are sworn friends.

Friendship here begins with a shared meal and no questions.

Ellen is freed to marry Norman Douglas, and a double wedding is planned. On Jem's last evening in the valley before Queen's Academy, Walter sees the Pied Piper coming. Jem cries out that he will follow him gladly around the world.
