Стихотворения in short

Taken together, these poems follow one voice through changing times. The young poet writes of pious scenes, kings, and far-off lands. The middle years bring Napoleon, revolution, children, and love.

What Стихотворения is about

What happens when a baby in a reedy cradle drifts down the Nile toward a group of young women at their morning bath? Victor Hugo's Poems opens on that scene. A princess named Iphis finds the sleeping infant and carries him before proud Pharaoh. The child is Moses, and the poem ends with the promise that a cradle will save the whole wide earth.

This book gathers poems from six decades of writing, from early odes and ballads to The Punishments, written in exile on Jersey, to poems for his grandchildren and scenes from his plays. You follow a life as well as a pen.

Для кого. Readers who love poems about fathers, children, exile, and kings will enjoy this collection. It suits lovers of ballads, love songs, fables, and French Romantic poetry that joins tenderness with thunder.

The 10 key ideas

Early poems start with rescued children and fallen kings

The book opens with Moses on the Nile, a poem dated 1820 and sent to a contest in Toulouse. Iphis bathes with her maidens at dawn and notices a skiff of reeds with a baby inside. She wades out, lifts him from the water, and brings him to Pharaoh. The poem closes on the promise that a single cradle will redeem a people.

Other early pieces are lighter or sharper. Envy and Avarice is a fable in which two ugly sisters meet the god Desire, and neither dares to speak first. The odes of 1818 to 1828 turn to kings and martyrs. The young Louis XVII arrives in heaven as a pale orphan who asks only whether his mother is there. Another ode pictures Christians feasted at the prison gate before the lions of Rome.

Piety, pity, and a hatred of cruelty already run through these pieces. The early poems pair tender scenes with a sharp eye for power.

Вопросы о книге Стихотворения

What is Victor Hugo's Poems about?

It gathers poems from six decades of Hugo's work. They cover Biblical scenes, ballads, Eastern tales, Napoleon, children, love, the poor, political exile, legends, and the Siege of Paris, plus a few scenes from his plays.

What is The Djinns about?

It is a poem from The Orientals in which a swarm of spirits sweeps past a house at night. The lines grow from two syllables to eight and then shrink again, so the sound rises, passes, and fades away.

Why does Napoleon appear so often in Hugo's poems?

Hugo sees Napoleon as the figure who shaped his age. Early poems admire his glory, and later ones, such as The Morrow of Grandeur, ask what becomes of power. In exile, Hugo turns on Napoleon III instead.

When were the poems written and how are they arranged?

They run from 1820 to the early 1880s. They are grouped by the collections they came from, such as The Orientals, Autumn Leaves, The Punishments, and The Terrible Year, and many carry dates or places.

What is the main message of Hugo's poems?

The poems keep returning to compassion for the weak, love of children, distrust of cruel power, and faith that justice will come. Exile and loss test that faith, yet the poet keeps speaking for freedom.
