Фаллические заметки in short
Phallic Miscellanies follows one symbol, the linga, from the village shrine to the ancient world. It begins with the stone and its dish, then sets it in Hindu thought, where Siva destroys so that things can be made new. Along the way you meet Jennings's comparisons with Osiris and Bacchus.
What Фаллические заметки is about
Picture a smooth black stone standing upright in a shallow stone dish. At dawn, girls from the village come to it. They sprinkle it with water from the Ganges and hang garlands of bilwa flowers on it. Five lamps burn beside it, and a bell rings to frighten off evil spirits. This is the linga.
Phallic Miscellanies by Hargrave Jennings, an English writer who died in 1890, gathers travelers' accounts, myths and scholarly notes on its worship. You get a guided walk through one symbol of creation, told largely in the voices of others. Many of them pass strong judgments, which belong to them and not to settled fact.
Для кого. This book suits readers who love comparative religion, Hindu myth, old travelers' reports and Victorian scholarship, and anyone curious how Siva, Osiris and Bacchus came to share one argument.

India is the home of the linga
Jennings opens with a bold claim. India, he says, is the chief home of linga worship, and has been for ages. Hardly a temple lacks a lingam. In many shrines it is the only form in which the god is honored.
The emblem is a smooth black stone rising from a stone shaped like a long saucer, the argha or yoni. Together they stand for the union of the sexes and for the active energy seen throughout nature. Lingas come in every size. Tiny ones sit in silver cases worn on the arm. Village ones rise two or three feet. Colonel Sykes is quoted on the huge round linga in the cave temple at Ellora, and on another near Tuneer that measures forty-two feet around.
The daily rite is plain. The priest bathes the stone, marks it with white powder, lays flowers and leaves on it, lights a lamp and bows. Jennings admits the true age of the worship cannot be known. He suggests it began as the worship of one spiritual being and grew into a pantheon of nearly a million gods.
The book starts with what a worshipper sees and does, before it turns to theory.
