Федон in short
Opposites arise from opposites, learning is recollection, the soul resembles what does not change, and the soul always brings life and so cannot admit death. What you keep is a way of thinking as much as a set of claims. You see how to test an idea by letting the strongest objections speak, how to tell a cause from a condition, and how to treat fear with reason.
What Федон is about
Imagine spending your last day alive in a prison cell, talking calmly with friends about whether the soul lives on. That is the scene of the Phaedo. Socrates, condemned by Athens, has until sunset, and he uses the hours to argue that a life given to wisdom is a good reason to meet death with cheer.
A young follower named Phaedo, who sat in the room, tells the story.
Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy big questions about death, mind and meaning, clear step by step reasoning, and a teacher who faces his last hours with humour.

A delayed execution gives Socrates one last day
In the town of Phlius, a man named Echecrates asks Phaedo to tell him how Socrates died. He has heard about the trial and the poison, but lacks a clear account of the death. He also wants to know why the death came so long after the trial.
On the day before the trial, the priest of Apollo crowned the stern of the sacred ship that Athens sends each year to the island of Delos. While the ship is away, the city must stay free of public executions. Winds can keep it at sea for weeks, so Socrates waits in prison.
On the final morning, the friends gather early, because the ship has returned. Inside, Xanthippe sits with her child and cries out that this is the last talk with his friends. Socrates asks Crito to have someone take her home. Phaedo laughs and weeps in turn. He does not pity Socrates, who seems to him blessed.
Questions about death and the soul are no classroom game. They are asked in the company of a man with only hours left.
A philosophical question gains weight when someone has to live, and die, by the answer.

Вопросы о книге Федон
What is the Phaedo about?
It is about the last day of Socrates in prison. He talks with friends about death and argues that the soul is immortal, using several reasoned proofs, until the time comes for him to drink the poison.
Who is Phaedo and who tells the story?
Phaedo was a young follower of Socrates who was present in the cell. In the dialogue he tells the story to Echecrates in the town of Phlius. Plato himself, the dialogue says, was ill and absent.
What are the Forms in the Phaedo?
The Forms are unchanging realities such as absolute Beauty, Equality and Justice. Socrates says we never see them with our eyes but grasp them by thought, and that ordinary things take their names by sharing in them.
Is the Phaedo a true story?
Socrates was a real person who died in Athens in 399 BC. Plato wrote the dialogue some years later, so it is best seen as his portrait of his teacher's last hours and ideas, shaped by his own thought.
What is the main message of the Phaedo?
The main message is that the soul is worth caring for above all, because it may outlast the body. Socrates also teaches that we should test every argument honestly and meet death with calm.
