Отечество in short
Pátria tells of one night in a castle by the sea. A weak king is about to sign away his colonies, surrounded by courtiers who joke about the ruin and plan to profit from it. Outside, a madman sings of a lost soul, a lost name and a lost home.
What Отечество is about
A king is about to sign away his colonies to England, and he cannot sleep. Outside his castle by the sea, a giant madman in rags sings through the storm, and the king's three dogs howl whenever they hear him. Who is this beggar, and why does a whole court fear him?
Pátria is a dramatic poem in verse by the Portuguese poet Guerra Junqueiro, published in 1896. It answers the shame of 1890, when Britain sent Portugal an ultimatum over its African claims and the monarchy gave way.
Для кого. You will enjoy this if you like verse drama, sharp political satire, stormy gothic scenes and stories about the soul of a nation. Readers drawn to Portugal and its poets will find a fierce, musical voice.

A storm, a treaty, and three schemers
The poem opens on a night of thunder and raging sea. In an armory of the king's castle, armor stands among portraits of the House of Braganza. After three men enter, Magnus places a parchment bearing the royal seal upon the table. It is the treaty with England, and it gives away Portugal's pride.
Magnus is a tailor's son who loves speeches about honor. Opiparus is the king's Chief Carver, a cynic who cares only for dinner and money. Ciganus is a cold schemer who will back any side that pays. He laughs at the parchment and calls it an obituary waiting for the dead man to sign.
Opiparus calls the flag a two-colored rag that the world wipes its nose on. Magnus lectures them on prudence and keeps his hope in the nation. Opiparus asks if that hope is kept at the Bank of England, two million in gold, payable on demand. Each man speaks of high principle, yet each thinks of his own purse.
The king has grown gloomy. He sleeps badly, and he blames a madman and the court chronicler for his nerves.
When leaders use noble words to hide their own profit, the nation pays the bill.

How it ends (spoiler)
The corsairs, led by the dogs, find the madman and nail him to a black cross on the mountain. He dies asking why God has left him. The castle burns, and the king is lost in the flames. At dawn an old peasant, the last of the departing people, arrives with a small grandchild in his arms. He finds the dead madman, prays, and picks up a great sword from the ground. The poem closes on a question of whether the child may one day wield it.

It is a verse drama set on one stormy night. A weak king is about to sign a treaty with England while a madman sings outside, and ghosts of past kings appear. The poem mourns the decline of Portugal.
Who is the madman in Pátria?
He is a symbol of Portugal itself. He has lost his name, his soul and his home, and he carries a worn book of his own past. The chronicler tells his legend as that of an ancient hero.
What is the treaty with England in the poem?
It is the parchment the king is about to sign, giving up Portugal's African claims. It refers to the British ultimatum of 1890, which shamed the country and the monarchy and drove the poet to write.

They are the king's three dogs, an old fat attack dog, a mangy wolf-dog and a greedy lapdog. They stand for paid guardians of a weak regime, loyal to their food and not to their master.
