Парижская пыль in short
Parisian Dust is one man's daily record of Paris across 1899 and 1900. It begins with the death of a poet and ends in the closing weeks of an Exposition that remade the city. In between come theatres, studios, hospitals, fairs, riots and trips to the south.
What Парижская пыль is about
What does a Paris dandy see when he walks out every night for two years? In Parisian Dust, Jean Lorrain answers with hundreds of dated entries. They run from New Year's Day 1899 into the closing weeks of the great Exposition of 1900. One day he stands in a Les Halles tavern at five in the morning. The next he watches Sarah Bernhardt rehearse.
Lorrain wrote these pieces for a Paris daily, and they read like a diary kept by a man who cannot stay home. Under it all runs the Dreyfus Affair, which splits families, dinner tables and theatre boxes. You get a city caught in motion, with its snobbery, its pity and its taste for spectacle.
Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy diaries, theatre history, art criticism and gossip with a sharp eye. It suits anyone curious about Belle Époque Paris and the people who filled its boxes, cafes and studios.

A poet's death opens the chronicle
The chronicle opens on New Year's Day 1899 with a death. The poet Georges Rodenbach, barely forty, has just died, and the writer says the year just ended took many artists with it. He calls that year a killer of poets.
He does not go to the funeral. He cannot stand the false faces and the predictable speeches. Instead he turns to Rodenbach's last poem, about an old church in a dead city, and copies its melancholy lines into his page.
The jump to gossip comes fast. By the fourth of January the talk is of strongmen at the Casino de Paris. A day later it is plays, actresses and the Affair. The writer shifts from grief to gossip without apology.
That mixture is the method. Each entry is a snapshot of a day, with its weather, its fashions and its overheard remarks. Mourning and amusement share the same page.

Вопросы о книге Парижская пыль
What is Parisian Dust about?
It is a collection of dated daily entries by Jean Lorrain, covering Paris from January 1899 to late 1900. He writes about theatre, art, society gossip, fairs, travel in the south and the 1900 Exposition, with the Dreyfus Affair in the background.
Who wrote Parisian Dust and when?
Jean Lorrain, a French writer and journalist who died in 1906, wrote it. The entries come from his newspaper columns of 1899 and 1900, and they were later gathered into a book, so each one stands as a short, dated scene.
Is Parisian Dust a true story?
Yes, it is nonfiction. It records real events, plays, exhibitions and people of the period, such as Sarah Bernhardt, Rodin and Doctor Pozzi. Lorrain adds his own opinions, and some overheard talk is set down in a lively, literary way.
What is the Affair mentioned throughout the book?
The Affair is the Dreyfus Affair, the French case over a falsely convicted army officer that divided the country. Lorrain sides against Dreyfus, and his entries show how the quarrel entered theatres, dinners and streets, with prejudice in places.
Is Parisian Dust worth reading today?
It gives a close, witty view of Belle Époque Paris, with short entries you can read one at a time. You meet famous artists and performers, the 1900 Exposition and a city changing fast, all in a lively, personal voice.
