Заметки о любви in short
Notes on Love is a set of short pieces in which Claude Anet looks at love as a force of nature that collides with society. He starts from the idea that love cannot be defined, and then tests it against the flesh, the family, money, beauty, jealousy, breakups, the Church and books. His method is the anecdote, the portrait with initials and the sudden aphorism.
What Заметки о любви is about
What happens when a writer refuses to define love and simply writes down what he sees? Claude Anet does exactly that in Notes on Love. He tells you at the start that no definition waits inside. Anyone who has felt love needs none, he says.
The notes were written between 1903 and 1908 in Paris, over ten chapters on desire, society, men, women, beauty, jealousy, breakups, the Church and books. The tone is witty and frank, and you gain a lively tour of one sharp mind.
Для кого. You will enjoy this if you like French wit, short essays you can dip into, frank talk about desire and jealousy, and Paris in the early 1900s.

Love resists definition, so Anet writes notes
Anet begins by refusing to offer a definition. Even the finest poetry cannot give the slightest sense of love to someone who has never felt it. If you have felt its power, you need no definition at all.
He says life's one sure purpose is the propagation of life, and that love can be seen as the action of a natural force. The dramas of love would lose some bitterness if we saw its birth and end as following laws, as fixed as gravity. Love is too living and shifting for a methodical essay. So he offers notes, written at different times and in different moods.
He also defends the word I. Reality is different for each of us, so it is more modest to say I than to pass off one man's experience as universal truth. He mocks the gossips who hunt for real women behind every portrait. For you, the book is a conversation with one opinionated companion, not a theory.
Read these notes as one honest man's view of love, not as a system.

Вопросы о книге Заметки о любви
What does Anet mean by Don Juanism?
He describes two kinds. One is the endless search for an absolute love that no woman can match. The other is the love of conquest, the game of winning women, which he sees as a stage of life.
Why does Anet say jealousy is only one kind?
He argues that jealousy is a chronic sickness in the person who feels it, whatever the facts. For him, a man with a faithful wife can suffer as much as one with a faithless wife.
