Без семьи in short
Nobody's Boy follows one child from a poor village hearth to roads, canals, cities and a mine. Remi is sold to Vitalis, trained as a street performer and left alone when his master is jailed. Snow, wolves and a death in Paris scatter his world, and a gardener's family gives him another home that the weather breaks.
What Без семьи is about
Picture a Shrove Tuesday kitchen in a poor French village. A boy of eight is about to eat pancakes his foster mother has borrowed ingredients for, when a man with a stick walks in. By the end of the week the boy has been sold for forty francs to an old showman with three dogs and a monkey.
Nobody's Boy, in French Sans Famille, was written by Hector Malot and published in 1878. It follows Remi, a foundling, across France with a harp on his shoulder and a white spaniel named Capi at his heels. You get a whole adventure told with plain warmth, plus a big question. What makes someone your family?
Для кого. Readers who love heartfelt orphan stories and road adventures filled with animals and street music will enjoy this novel. Families who read aloud will value its friendship, loyalty and kindness.

A foundling learns his mother is not his own
Remi grows up in Chavanon, one of the poorest villages in France, sure that Mother Barberin is his mother. She warms his feet in December and covers him with her skirt in the rain. Her husband Jerome works in Paris as a stonecutter.
Then a falling scaffold injures Barberin, and a lawsuit drains the family of money. The cow Rousette must be sold. Malot makes the sale feel like a funeral, because a cow means butter, milk and safety.
On Shrove Tuesday the batter is rising when Barberin walks in, swings his stick and throws the butter into an onion soup. That night Remi hears the truth. He was found on a doorstep in Paris. The next day Barberin sells him for forty francs to Signor Vitalis, a travelling showman, who leads him away by the wrist.
Love given freely stays with a child even when the house is gone.
