Моя леди Никотин in short

My Lady Nicotine is a set of linked sketches told by a husband who has given up tobacco for marriage. He looks back on smoky, silent evenings in an old inn, where five friends share the Arcadia Mixture and each shows a different foible. Gilray falls in and out of love, Marriot reasons himself into confusion, Jimmy hides his failures, Scrymgeour sacrifices comfort to fashion, and Pettigrew hides his cigars.

What Моя леди Никотин is about

What would you give up for the woman you love? The narrator of My Lady Nicotine gives up his pipe. He tells you so on the first page, then spends thirty-three short chapters looking back at his smoky bachelor days, half mocking them and half longing for them.

J. M. Barrie, the Scottish writer who later gave the world Peter Pan, published the book in 1890. The linked sketches follow friends who share one tobacco, the Arcadia Mixture, and gather each night in rooms in an old inn. You get a gallery of oddballs, each undone by a small vice or fear, and a quiet narrator whose silence lands him in one muddle after another.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy gentle British humor, tales of friends and bachelor rooms, comic exaggeration, and a writer who laughs hardest at himself.

The story in 10 parts

A man trades his pipe for marriage

The book opens with the end of a habit. The narrator gave up smoking because the woman who agreed to marry him made him choose between tobacco and her. He does not pretend it was a noble decision. He was so used to smoke that he felt unfinished without it.

Now he sees smoking through his wife's eyes, and the humor lies in how fast he has changed sides. He adds up two cigars a day and four ounces of tobacco a week, and finds a yearly sum that could buy rugs, a bonnet and a dress. He bans smoking in the house, though his old friends complain.

Yet his praise of married life keeps slipping. After dinner he still wanders the room like a man who has lost something. When his wife plays sweet, sad music, he drifts back to a dusty room at the top of an inn stair, with a cane chair and a brown jar between his knees. Then his wife touches his shoulder and says he has been asleep. A man can leave a habit behind and still carry the whole room it lived in.

How it ends (spoiler)

The narrator keeps his word. After a farewell night in which his friends watch him smoke his last pipe, he leaves tobacco behind and settles into married life, where he forbids smoking in his house. Yet when his wife is asleep and the house is quiet, he sits with his empty brier in his mouth and listens to the man on the other side of the wall tapping out his pipes. When the last tap sounds, he smiles sadly and goes to bed.
