Mizora: A Prophecy in short

Mizora tells of a Russian exile who escapes imprisonment, survives the Arctic, and sails through amber mist into a hidden country of women. They have built a society on science and free schooling. Food comes from chemistry, machines do the hard work, and only intellect earns rank.

What Mizora: A Prophecy is about

What would a society look like if it put education first, handed the heavy work to machines, and had no rich and poor? In Mizora: A Prophecy, a Russian exile rows across an open Arctic sea, passes through a ring of glowing mist, and lands in a country where every citizen is a blonde woman.

Mary E. Bradley Lane, an American author, wrote this utopian novel. The narrator is a noblewoman sentenced to the Siberian mines for speaking against her government. She escapes, and she stays in Mizora for fifteen years. You get a guided tour of an imagined world, and one question the narrator cannot let go: where are the men?

Для кого. You will enjoy this book if you like imagined societies, early science fiction, and bold ideas about schooling, work and equality. It suits readers curious about nineteenth-century reform dreams.

The story in 10 parts

A noblewoman is driven from her home

The narrator is a Russian of noble birth, wealthy and well connected. Her schooling in Paris gives her a taste for republican ideas. Back home she speaks them aloud, and the government marks her as a danger.

She marries Alexis at twenty and names their baby boy after her father. Then she visits a Polish school friend. Russian soldiers burst in on a gathering of mourners, and her friend dies from a bayonet thrust. Grief makes the narrator pour out accusations against her government. She is arrested and sentenced to life in the Siberian mines. A bribed jailer lets her slip away in disguise.

The only ship her husband can find is a whaler bound for the Northern Seas. The vessel is trapped in ice and abandoned. The crew leave her among the Esquimaux, where she puts on reindeer furs and earns respect by leading a hunt home through a snowstorm with the captain's compass.

Her loss is the lens for everything she sees later.

They return north to seek the sea of Mizora, but the Esquimaux will not help them, and Wauna dies in a hut, asking to be buried beyond the sight of men. The narrator, alone and childless, writes down the story of her wanderings.
