Metamorphosis in short
Metamorphosis follows Gregor Samsa from the morning he wakes as an insect through the following months in the family apartment. At first he is the son who earns the money. Once the family sees him, they lock him away, feed him through a door and slowly rearrange their lives around his absence.
What Metamorphosis is about
Imagine waking up as an insect, and your first worry is the train. That is where Gregor Samsa begins. He lies on a hard, armored back in his small bedroom, his thin legs waving in the air. He is a traveling salesman, and he thinks of his boss and the five o'clock train he has already missed.
Metamorphosis is a novella by Franz Kafka, written in 1912 and printed in 1915. It follows the Samsa family over several months, almost all inside one apartment and through Gregor's own eyes. You get what it asks about money, duty and what a person is worth once he stops earning.
Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy short stories with a strange idea at the center, family dramas told in close detail, and a calm, plain voice. It suits anyone curious about work, money and loyalty at home.

Gregor wakes as an insect and frets about work
The story opens with its one impossible fact, stated flatly. Gregor Samsa wakes in his bed and finds that he has become a gigantic insect. He sees his domed brown belly, his armored back and a crowd of thin legs that will not obey him.
Gregor does not scream or ask how this could happen. He looks at his room, which is still his human room, with its table of cloth samples and the picture of a woman in furs. Then he checks the clock. It says half past six, and his train left at five.
His thoughts run straight to his job. He complains about bad meals and people who never become friends. He would quit on the spot, but he owes his boss money because of his parents' debt. Even now, in a body he cannot control, he feels he has no right to stop.
Getting out of bed takes a plan. He rocks until he falls onto the carpet. Kafka gives each attempt the weight of a real problem, and that makes the scene both comic and sad.
When disaster arrives, the mind goes first to what it owes.
