Мария Стюарт in short

Mary Stuart follows a prisoner queen and the queen who holds her, across a few days at the end of Mary's captivity. Mary arrives already condemned. She argues that her judges have no right, warns a young admirer against rescue, and seeks her last hope in Leicester.

What Мария Стюарт is about

Imagine being a queen in a prison cell. Your jewels are counted, your mirror is gone, your lute is taken away, and your jailer tells you to settle your account with heaven. That is how Friedrich Schiller opens Mary Stuart, a play about the last days of Mary, Queen of Scots, held at Fotheringay Castle by her cousin Elizabeth of England.

Schiller, a German poet and dramatist who died in 1805, wrote it as a tragedy in five acts and in verse. He turns the record into a duel between two women, each with a crown, a fear and a name to keep clean. He also adds a meeting of the queens that history does not record.

Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy courtroom speeches, palace intrigue and rival queens, or if you wonder how rulers justify what they do.

A queen's last treasures are taken from her

The play opens in a common room at Fotheringay Castle. Sir Amias Paulet, Mary's keeper, forces open her cabinet while her nurse, Hannah Kennedy, tries to stop him. He finds a hidden drawer holding a crown set with the French lily, and has it carried away.

The quarrel shows how far Mary has fallen. She has plain pewter on her table, no mirror, no books but a Bible, and no lute. Paulet says each loss is a safeguard, since an idle hour breeds plots. Kennedy answers that a noble heart can bear great losses but is cut to the soul by the loss of small comforts.

Paulet also states the charge. Mary has stirred rebellion from behind these walls, and she has refused to sign away her claim to the English crown. Mary enters veiled, with a crucifix in her hand, and shrugs off the theft. Trinkets do not make a queen, she says. She asks for a priest, and Paulet refuses.

A ruler stripped of everything still holds power through the way she carries herself.

Вопросы о книге Мария Стюарт

What is Mary Stuart by Schiller about?

It is a play about the final days of Mary, Queen of Scots, held prisoner by Queen Elizabeth of England. It follows her disputed sentence, a plan to free her, and the council that debates whether she must die.

Did Mary and Elizabeth really meet in the play's park scene?

No. The two queens never met in life. Schiller invented the meeting to give the drama its center, letting the two rivals confront each other directly and show their pride and fear.

Who is Leicester and why does he matter?

Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, is Elizabeth's favorite courtier. He secretly offers help to Mary while keeping the queen's trust, and his double dealing connects the two women's stories.

When was Mary Stuart written and is it a true story?

Schiller wrote it in the years around 1800 and it was first staged in 1800. It is based on real events of the 1580s, but he changes scenes and compresses time for drama.

Is Mary Stuart easy to follow on the page or stage?

Yes, the story moves through clear scenes with a small cast of strong characters. Each act has a clear focus, and the speeches are lively, so it reads like a political thriller.
