Mansfield Park in short

Mansfield Park follows a poor girl raised among rich relations who treat her as a useful guest. Fanny Price grows up shy and watchful, guided by her cousin Edmund and ignored by nearly everyone else. When the lively Crawfords arrive, the house is drawn into flirtation, a forbidden play and choices that test each person's character.

What Mansfield Park is about

What happens to a child who is given a home but not a place in it? Mansfield Park begins with that question. At ten years old, Fanny Price leaves her crowded family in Portsmouth for a great house in Northamptonshire, where her wealthy relations have agreed to raise her. Her aunt Norris makes the plan sound generous, yet she has no intention of paying for it.

Jane Austen published the novel in 1814. It tells of a quiet girl whose chief power is that she keeps her principles when everyone around her bends. A play, a ball, a walk through a wood and a letter all carry real weight.

Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy sharp social comedy, quiet heroines with firm convictions, and love stories where character matters more than charm.

A poor girl is sent to Mansfield Park

Three sisters marry very differently. One captures Sir Thomas Bertram of Mansfield Park and becomes Lady Bertram. One marries a clergyman, Mr. Norris. The third, Frances, marries a lieutenant of marines with no fortune, and the families stop speaking.

Eleven years pass. Mrs. Price is poor and burdened with children, and she writes a letter begging for help. Mrs. Norris, who loves giving orders and hates spending money, proposes that the family take in the eldest daughter. Her own house proves quite impossible, so Mansfield Park receives the child instead.

Fanny arrives at ten, small, frightened and homesick. Her cousins are astonished that she has no French. Her aunt Norris keeps telling her how grateful she should be, and the girls learn that Fanny is far below them.

Generosity that costs the giver nothing is not generosity at all.
