Рассказы Люси Мод Монтгомери, 1909–1922 in short

This collection holds more than thirty stories, and nearly all begin with someone shut out or shut in. An old couple lose their home. A boy loses his rock people.

What Рассказы Люси Мод Монтгомери, 1909–1922 is about

Picture an old woman in a poorhouse, watching the sun go down on the night of her fiftieth wedding anniversary. She weeps because she thinks her life ends in shame. Then a young man she once raised steps through the door with a buggy and a plan.

This book gathers short stories by L. M. Montgomery, who also wrote Anne of Green Gables. She wrote them for magazines between 1909 and 1922, mostly set on Prince Edward Island or the Canadian prairie. They take small people at low moments and let kindness reach them. You meet a dreamy boy with imaginary rock people, a gardener who talks to his cat, and a tin peddler who calls everything romantic.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy warm, funny stories about neighbors, gardens, letters and matchmaking, and like to read one complete tale at a time.

The story in 10 parts

Quiet kindness drives the first two tales

The collection opens with A Golden Wedding. Lovell Stevens comes home from the West and finds the little house behind the apple trees boarded up. His old guardians, Uncle Tom and Aunt Sally, now live in the poorhouse. A mortgage took the house, and their furniture was sold.

In two weeks they will have been married fifty years, and Aunt Sally cannot bear to spend that day in a place she calls a disgrace. Lovell and Mrs. Stetson drive from house to house, collecting the old furniture, the pink china, the grandfather clock. Montgomery shows a whole village leaning in to help one old couple.

The second tale, A Redeeming Sacrifice, is darker. A handsome drifter named Paul King dances with Joan Shelley while the whole room frowns. Then he overhears two men talk about what her life will be if she marries him.

Love shows itself in what a person is willing to give away.
