War Scroll in short
The War Scroll turns a belief into a plan. A desert community took its faith in two spirits, light and darkness, and wrote out a war between them. The Sons of Light, led by priests and backed by angels, face Belial and the Kittim over many years and in seven lots, with God deciding the outcome.
What War Scroll is about
What would you put in a battle plan for the end of the world? The people who wrote the War Scroll had a clear answer. They listed the words to carve on every trumpet, the length of every banner, the age of every soldier, and the prayers to say when the first wave failed.
This is a Hebrew text from the Dead Sea Scrolls, found in the caves near Qumran in 1947. Its author is unknown, but scholars link it to the Jewish community at Qumran. It describes a final war between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness, led by the dark angel Belial. It is part field manual, part hymnbook and part vision of the last days.

A shepherd's cave gives up a war plan
The story begins with a Bedouin shepherd boy named Muhammad edh-Dhib. In the winter of 1946 to 1947 he went looking for a lost goat near the Dead Sea and found a narrow opening in the cliffs of Qumran. Inside were clay jars holding wrapped scrolls. Later searches turned up manuscripts in eleven caves in all.
The dry air and sealed darkness kept the parchment safe for almost two thousand years. Scholars think the scrolls were hidden around 68 CE, when Roman legions were advancing through Judea to crush the Jewish revolt. The people who hid them never came back.
The Cave 1 copy of the War Scroll carries nineteen columns of clear writing. Fragments of at least five other copies were found in Cave 4. That matters, because it shows the text was copied again and again, so the community used it often. Some columns are damaged, and the scroll itself notes that three of the later engagements have not been preserved.
For a modern reader, this is a working document from a real community, speaking in its own words from before the New Testament was written.

What is the War Scroll about?
