Sibylline Oracles in short

The Sibylline Oracles gather Greek prophetic verse spoken in the voice of an ancient prophetess, yet written by Jewish and Christian authors across about six centuries. They begin with creation, the fall and the flood, move through the rise and ruin of kingdoms, and end with fire, resurrection and a world made right. Moral teaching runs through every layer, from care for the poor to refusal of idols.

What Sibylline Oracles is about

Who is speaking when the Sibyl speaks? In the old Greek and Roman world she was an inspired prophetess who foretold the fate of nations, and her name became a byword for prophecy.

The poems in this book are something else. They are Greek hexameter verse, composed over about six centuries by unnamed authors, most of them Jewish or later Christian. They borrow her famous voice to speak for the God of Israel and then for Christ.

Для кого. Readers drawn to ancient religion, apocalyptic visions and the meeting of Greek, Jewish and Christian traditions will love this work. So will anyone who enjoys prophecy and poetry born under pressure.

The Sibyl speaks through borrowed voices

The Sibylline Oracles are not the books Rome once guarded. Those were stored beneath Jupiter's temple, but a blaze partly destroyed them in 83 BCE, and they were eventually lost altogether. What survives is a different anthology in Greek, written by many hands, most of them Jewish or Christian.

Why borrow a pagan prophetess? Because her name carried enormous weight. A Jewish author in Alexandria around 150 BCE who spoke in her voice could argue that even the oracle the Greeks trusted had always pointed toward one God. The mask also gave protection. A writer could condemn Rome or Egypt and say that an ancient woman had spoken, not himself.

The third book comes from the second century BCE, the fourth and fifth follow the fall of Jerusalem in 70 CE, and later books carry Christian teaching. Christian thinkers such as Augustine quoted the Sibyl as a witness to Christ, so the poems were copied for centuries.

The Sibyl is a borrowed voice, and behind it stand real communities arguing for their faith.

Вопросы о книге Sibylline Oracles

What are the Sibylline Oracles about?

They are prophetic poems about creation, the flood, the rise and fall of kingdoms, the coming of Christ, the fall of Jerusalem and Rome, and a final judgment by fire followed by a just and peaceful age.

Who wrote the Sibylline Oracles?

No names survive. The poems come from many Jewish and Christian authors writing in Greek, mostly in the eastern Mediterranean, from about the second century BCE to the seventh century CE, later gathered into one collection.

Who was the Sibyl?

The Sibyl was an inspired prophetess of Greek and Roman tradition, placed at Cumae, Erythrae and other sites. She was said to speak unasked about the fates of nations. Here her voice is borrowed by later authors.

What is the acrostic in Book 8?

The first letters of consecutive lines spell, in Greek, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, Cross. The initials of Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior form the Greek word for fish, a symbol early Christians used.

Are the Sibylline Oracles in the Bible?

No. They stand outside the Jewish and Christian canons, though Church Fathers such as Lactantius and Augustine quoted them. They survive as an anthology valued for what they show about early Jewish and Christian thought.
