The Questions of John in short

The Questions of John is a dialogue set at the last supper. John asks, Jesus answers, and each question grows out of the one before. The talk moves from the betrayer to the story of Satan, the making of the world, the making of people, the old covenant and the end of time.

What The Questions of John is about

What if, at the last supper, Jesus answered questions that no Gospel records? The Questions of John, also called the Secret Supper, imagines exactly that. John rests against the chest of Jesus, asks who will betray him, and then keeps asking.

The work is anonymous. It survives in Latin in two medieval manuscripts, one from Carcassonne and one in Vienna, and both are linked to the Cathars, the dualist Christians of southern France and northern Italy. They prized it as secret teaching from Christ. You get short, vivid answers to old questions: where evil began, who made the visible world, and what happens at the last judgment.

Для кого. This book suits readers who love early Christian mysteries, medieval religious movements, creation myths and the problem of evil, and anyone curious about what the Cathars cherished.

The 7 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A private supper conversation shapes the whole book

The book opens with a blessing and presents itself as questions asked at a secret supper by John, apostle and evangelist. The subject is the governance of this world, its ruler, and Adam. From the first lines the reader knows this is private teaching, given to one disciple in the quiet of an evening.

John speaks in the first person. He says he was leaning on the breast of Jesus when he asked who would betray him. The answer echoes the Gospel scene. The one who dips his hand in the dish will be entered by Satan. That exchange becomes the hinge of the book, because the name of Satan prompts John to ask what Satan once was.

The dialogue form matters. John does not receive a lecture. He asks, Jesus answers, and the next question grows out of the last. This lets the listener follow one step at a time, which makes the strange material easier to carry. Every later scene, from the fall of Satan to the last judgment, is offered as hidden teaching that the public Gospels leave out. The takeaway is that the book is a guided conversation in which each question leads to the next.

Вопросы о книге The Questions of John

What is the Questions of John about?

It is a dialogue in which John asks Jesus at the last supper about the fall of Satan, the making of the visible world, the origin of human beings, and the judgment at the end of time. Jesus answers each in turn.

What is the Interrogatio Iohannis, also called the Secret Supper?

It is a Latin name for the same text. Interrogatio Iohannis means the questions of John, and Secret Supper refers to its setting, a private teaching given to John during the last supper.

Who wrote the Questions of John and when?

No author is known. The two surviving Latin manuscripts, from Carcassonne and Vienna, date to around the twelfth or thirteenth century and are linked to the Cathars. Many scholars think it draws on older Bogomil and Gnostic material.

Why is the Questions of John not in the Bible?

It was written and copied in dualist communities, not in the circles that formed the Christian canon. Its teaching that Satan made the visible world differs from the mainstream view, and it survives only in medieval Cathar manuscripts.

Who was Satan according to the Questions of John?

He is a high ruler at the throne of the invisible Father who schemes to be like the Most High. After his fall, with a pause granted by the Father, he shapes the visible world and human bodies.
