The Martyrdom of Peter in short

The story follows a single arc. A preacher of self-control in a proud capital angers a prefect and a husband, and the quarrel climbs from private homes to the Senate. Friends, guards, widows, and orphans beg the apostle to flee.

What The Martyrdom of Peter is about

Picture an old man slipping out of Rome at night. The fastenings of his chains have loosened and fallen from his leg. The city gate is just ahead, and freedom lies beyond it. Then someone comes walking toward him, and Peter knows that face.

This is the closing section of the Acts of Peter, an early Christian narrative written in Greek in the later second century. Its author is not known. It tells of Peter's last days under Nero, and you will hear the quarrel, the flight, the choice, the speech on the cross, and what follows.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you love early Christian stories, Roman history under Nero, the roots of the Quo Vadis scene, or short ancient tales where one choice carries a whole life.

Peter's preaching of chastity unsettles Rome's powerful

Peter has already faced Simon Magus, floggings, and the filth of prisons. Now he is in Rome, praying and teaching, and crowds come to faith around him. He urges the believers to live chastely and with self-control.

The narrator calls Rome rich and proud, ruled by shameful excess. Peter's message cuts straight across that life. Many noble women begin to keep their hearts and bodies pure. Among them are four women close to the prefect Agrippa, named Agrippina, Eucharia, Euphemia, and Dionis.

Nero, whom the narrator calls the Antichrist, has Peter chained in a filthy cell. The women visit him anyway and hear his teaching. They return to Agrippa's house weary of his bed, and they agree to stop sleeping with him.

Agrippa feels offended and dejected. He sends spies, then tries flattery, then threats. He swears to burn them and to torture Peter. The women do not bend. They say it is better to endure any torment than to reject Christ, to whom they have vowed themselves. Agrippa gnashes his teeth and looks for a way to kill Peter under the look of a just cause.

A new way of living can anger the powerful long before anyone argues about belief.

How it ends (spoiler)

The people answer Peter's last prayer with Amen, and he dies on the cross, head downward, as he asked. Marcellus takes the body down, washes and embalms it, and lays it in a new tomb. Peter appears to him in the night and tells him to leave the dead to bury the dead and to proclaim the kingdom. Nero, angry that Agrippa killed Peter without his sentence, strips him of office. Nero then sees Peter in a vision and is warned to stop persecuting the believers.

Вопросы о книге The Martyrdom of Peter

What is the Martyrdom of Peter about?

It tells of the last days of the apostle Peter in Rome under Nero. A prefect's anger, a plot, the pleas of his friends, a meeting with Christ on the road, and a speech from the cross form the main events.

What does Quo Vadis mean in the story of Peter?

Quo vadis is Latin for where are you going. It names the scene in which Peter, leaving Rome, meets Christ walking toward the city, asks the question, and hears that Christ is going to be crucified again.

Is the Martyrdom of Peter in the Bible?

No. It belongs to the Acts of Peter, an early Christian writing outside the New Testament. The gospels and Acts do not describe Peter's death, so this narrative became a main source for the tradition about it.

When was the Acts of Peter written and where does the text survive?

Scholars usually date it to the later second century. It was written in Greek, and its fullest form is a Latin manuscript from Vercelli in Italy, supported by Greek fragments and quotations in early writers.

Why was Peter crucified upside down?

In the narrative, Peter asks for it himself, saying he is unworthy to die in the same way as his Lord. He then gives a speech explaining the inverted position as a sign of fallen humanity.
