The Epistle to Diognetus in short
The letter answers a seeker in three movements. First it shows why idols and sacrifices cannot serve a God who needs nothing. Then it shows who Christians are: ordinary citizens of every city, loving all and hated by many, the soul of the world.
What The Epistle to Diognetus is about
What would you say to a curious friend who asked why your community lives the way it does? A man named Diognetus puts exactly that question to a Christian writer in the ancient world, and the reply is one of the most admired short letters of early Christianity.
The Epistle to Diognetus is an anonymous letter in Greek, most often placed in the second century. The writer calls himself a disciple of the apostles and writes with courtesy and care. You hear his answers in order, from the mockery of idols to the famous picture of Christians as the soul of the world, and then the story of a God who waited with patience.
Для кого. Readers who enjoy plainspoken ancient voices and wonder how early Christians explained themselves to their neighbors will love this text, especially its vivid images of belonging, citizenship, and kindness.

A seeker's questions deserve a respectful answer
The letter opens with a man of rank and a list of questions. Diognetus wants to know what God the Christians trust and how they worship him. He asks why they despise death and reject the gods the Greeks honor. He asks why they set aside Jewish customs, and what kind of love they have for one another.
One last question closes the list. Why has this new way of life appeared only now? The writer calls the questions precise and carefully considered, and he welcomes the eagerness behind them. He does not hear an attack.
Then comes a request that sets the tone for all that follows. The writer asks Diognetus to clear his mind of old preconceptions and become, as it were, a new person ready to hear a fresh account. He prays that his words will make the listener better.
The idols come first, then the Jewish customs, then the portrait of Christians, and then the reason behind it all in the plan of God.
For a listener today the opening is itself a lesson. It shows a believer speaking with an honest outsider without scorn and without fear. Meet an honest question with courtesy, clarity, and a willingness to listen.

Вопросы о книге The Epistle to Diognetus
What is the Epistle to Diognetus about?
It is a letter answering a man named Diognetus, who asks why Christians reject the Greek gods, set aside Jewish customs, love one another, and live as they do. The writer begins with idols and Jewish practices, then describes Christian life and explains its divine source.
Who wrote the Epistle to Diognetus and when?
The author is unknown. Quadratus, Aristides, and Apollos have been suggested, but scholars have not agreed. Most place the letter in the second century, while some argue for a date a little earlier or later.
What does Christians are the soul of the world mean?
In chapter four the writer compares Christians to the soul in a body. They live in every city, are not owned by it, are hated without cause, and by their goodness hold the world together.
Why is the Epistle to Diognetus not in the Bible?
It was not among the writings gathered into the New Testament. It does not claim to come from an apostle, and it seems to have been little known in antiquity. It survives through one medieval manuscript.
Is the Epistle to Diognetus easy to read?
It is short and organized around clear questions. The chapters develop connected arguments, and vivid images such as crafted idols and the soul in the body make the argument easy to follow by ear.
