The Fragments of Heracleon in short

Heracleon wrote the earliest known commentary on the Gospel of John, and it survives only in fragments quoted by Origen of Alexandria, with two pieces in Clement. He reads the gospel as a coded account of the divine realm. The Word works through a lower Craftsman, the temple is a ladder of levels, and the Samaritan woman is a soul seeking her partner above.

What The Fragments of Heracleon is about

Imagine a book that survives only because an opponent could not stop quoting it. Around the second century, a teacher named Heracleon wrote a commentary on the Gospel of John, working through it verse by verse. His is the earliest known commentary on that gospel, and his own pages are gone.

What remains are about fifty pieces, lifted out of the huge commentary of Origen of Alexandria, who quoted him in order to argue against him. Heracleon came from the school of Valentinus, who taught that spiritual people carry a spark of divine light waiting to be awakened.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you love ancient Christian writing, the history of how scripture was read, symbolic interpretation, or lost voices that survive in the pages of their critics.

Origen kept Heracleon alive by arguing against him

The fragments exist because of a quarrel. Origen of Alexandria, a Christian teacher of the third century, wrote a vast commentary on the Gospel of John. Whenever he met a reading he thought dangerous, he quoted Heracleon and then answered him. Without that habit, far less of Heracleon's interpretation would survive.

For centuries Heracleon was known through the writings of his opponents. Irenaeus of Lyon mentions him in his catalogue of false teachings. In the nineteenth century the scholar Adolf von Harnack picked out the pieces buried in Origen and numbered them. Readers could now study Heracleon on his own terms.

The work of extraction is delicate. Origen does not always mark where a quotation ends. Scholars still debate which words are Heracleon's. Elaine Pagels argued that he was answering real puzzles in the gospel and was no careless misreader.

The setting matters too. Christianity of that time had no fixed list of books and no settled doctrine. Valentinus, Marcion and Basilides were all taking part in an open conversation. The sharp lines between orthodoxy and heresy were drawn later.

Power and organization decided which communities defined acceptable belief, and many texts of the losers were destroyed. The Nag Hammadi library, found in Egypt in 1945, showed how much had gone. A lost voice can still speak through the book of the man who answered it.

Вопросы о книге The Fragments of Heracleon

Who was Heracleon?

Heracleon was a teacher of the Valentinian school of Gnostic Christianity who most likely worked between 145 and 180. He wrote the earliest known commentary on the Gospel of John. Little else is known about his life beyond this work.

What is the earliest known commentary on the Gospel of John?

It is the work of Heracleon, a Valentinian teacher of the second century. It went through the gospel verse by verse. Only about fifty fragments survive, because Origen of Alexandria quoted them in his own commentary in order to answer them.

How do the fragments of Heracleon survive?

They survive inside the commentary on John by Origen, who quoted Heracleon to refute him, and in two pieces kept by Clement of Alexandria. Adolf von Harnack first numbered them, and later scholars such as Elaine Pagels refined the collection.

What does Heracleon say about the Samaritan woman at the well?

He reads her as a soul awakened by the Savior. Her husband is her partner in the Fullness, and her earlier life is the material evil she lived among. The living water is the Savior's lasting gift of life.

What does worship in spirit and truth mean for Heracleon?

For Heracleon it means worshipping the Father of Truth, who is spirit, and not the creation or its Craftsman. Worship must suit the nature of the one worshipped, so it must be spiritual and not fleshly or tied to a place.
