The Ginza Rabba in short

The Ginza Rabba tells one great story in many voices. A King of Light lives above all darkness. A dark world below is ruled by Ur and Ruha, and the earth is made in between by lesser makers.

What The Ginza Rabba is about

What happens to a soul when the body dies? In the Ginza Rabba, guides lead the soul through watch-stations, where guards ask its name and demand its sign and baptism. It answers with its baptism, its alms and its good works, and it passes on toward light.

The Ginza Rabba, the Great Treasure, is the main scripture of the Mandaeans, a small community from the marshes of southern Iraq and Iran. It is written in Mandaic, and priests and scribes copied it over many centuries. Its Right half holds hymns, teachings and creation stories. Its Left half holds songs for the dead.

Для кого. This book suits readers who love creation myths, ancient religious poetry, the roots of Gnostic thought, the world around John the Baptist, and the question of what the soul meets after death.

The 10 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

A treasure in two halves, Right and Left

The Ginza Rabba is not one story told from start to finish. It is a collection of hymns, teachings and visions gathered into a single volume. Its name means the Great Treasure, and the Mandaeans treat it as the store of what they know.

The Right Ginza looks outward to the worlds of light, the making of the earth and the duties of the faithful. The Left Ginza looks inward to death and the soul's road home. Together they run from the first moment of creation to the last breath of a dying believer.

Many pieces begin by invoking the great Life, and many close with the cry that the Life is victorious. The cry ties the parts together like a refrain. The voices change too. Hibil-Ziwa speaks, then Adam, then a lone soul.

The takeaway is that this scripture is best read as a library of voices rather than a single plot.
