The Second Book of Esdras in short

The book is built as an argument that turns into a vision. Ezra begins with a complaint about divine justice. Uriel answers with riddles about what humans can measure, then with teachings on the evil seed and the few who are saved.

What The Second Book of Esdras is about

What do you say to God when your city lies in ashes? The writer of The Second Book of Esdras speaks in the name of the scribe Ezra, and he offers no quick comfort. Ezra lies on his bed in Babylon, thirty years after the fall of Jerusalem, and he puts God on trial. Why does Zion suffer while Babylon grows rich?

This apocalypse, a Greek word for an unveiling, was most likely written a generation after Rome burned the Temple in 70 CE. You will meet three arguments with the angel Uriel, then visions of a weeping woman, an eagle, a man rising from the sea, and the dictation of lost books.

Для кого. Readers who love ancient visions, symbols and the big questions of faith and suffering will find a companion here, as will anyone curious about the Temple's fall and the roots of the Book of Revelation.

Grief after Rome burned the Temple shaped this book

The Second Book of Esdras is not one book written at one time. Chapters 3 to 14 are the original work, a Jewish apocalypse often named Fourth Ezra, dated to roughly 100 CE. The Hebrew or Aramaic original is lost.

The author writes in the voice of Ezra, the scribe who helped rebuild Jewish life after the Babylonian exile. Using an ancient name was a recognised literary habit. Ezra is placed thirty years after the first fall of Jerusalem, yet the pain on the page belongs to the writer's own day. The Temple had stood at the centre of worship and national pride. Its loss raised the question of what God had promised.

The core came down in Latin, Syriac, Ethiopic and other languages. In the Latin line, a copying error once dropped about seventy verses from the eagle vision, and a nineteenth century scholar found them in a manuscript kept at Amiens. The framing chapters, 1 and 2 and 15 and 16, are read as later Christian additions.

The book is a Jewish answer to catastrophe, read again through Christian hopes. Both layers care about the same hurt, and the book remains a voice from ruins that later hands found worth keeping.

Вопросы о книге The Second Book of Esdras

What is the Second Book of Esdras about?

It presents Ezra, thirty years after Jerusalem's fall, questioning God about suffering and justice. An angel answers him, and visions follow: a woman who becomes the city of Zion, an eagle, a man from the sea, and the writing of lost books.

Is 2 Esdras the same as 4 Ezra?

The core, chapters 3 to 14, is called Fourth Ezra by scholars. Chapters 1 and 2 and chapters 15 and 16 are later Christian additions, sometimes named Fifth and Sixth Ezra, and the Latin tradition joins all sixteen as one book.

Who wrote 2 Esdras and when?

The author is unknown. Most scholars date the core to about 100 CE, a generation after the Temple fell in 70 CE. The writer used Ezra's name, a common practice in apocalyptic writing, to speak about his own time.

Why is 2 Esdras not in most Bibles?

It was never part of the Jewish canon. It travelled with Latin Bibles for centuries and now sits as an appendix in the Catholic Latin Bible and in the apocrypha of some Protestant Bibles, a result of gradual decisions by different communities.

What does the eagle in 2 Esdras mean?

The angel explains the eagle as the fourth kingdom of Daniel's vision. Scholars read its twelve wings and three heads as a coded account of Roman emperors, and the lion that judges it as the anointed one.
