Жизнеописания ранних Медичи in short

The book follows one family across about a century, mostly in its own words. It starts with a tangle of legends and a plain record of guild citizens who rose by being useful and quiet. Cosimo turns a bank into a state and survives exile.

What Жизнеописания ранних Медичи is about

What did the first Medici sound like when nobody was watching? A mother scolds her son for not asking sooner for his lynx-lined cape. A boy begs his father for a pony, over and over. A ruler mourns his wife in the same careful hand he uses for treaties.

Lives of the Early Medici was put together by Janet Ross and published in London in 1910. She gathered private letters, diaries and dispatches from the Florentine archives and translated them for English readers. She wanted the people back, with their households, illnesses, jokes and quarrels. The book follows four generations, from Cosimo to Lorenzo the Magnificent.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you like the Italian Renaissance seen from inside the home, or if letters and diaries draw you more than speeches.

The 10 key ideas

The Medici begin as guild citizens, not nobles

The book opens with a family whose origins nobody can pin down. Enemies say a charcoal burner started the line. Friends claim descent from Perseus or from a knight who killed a giant for Charlemagne. Even the six red balls on the shield get many explanations.

The documents give a plainer path. By 1291 a Medici, Ardingo, held high office in Florence. A law of 1293 excluded nobles from office, so the family were not old nobility. Salvestro de Medici backed the common guilds in the Ciompi riot of 1378, and the Medici were seen as defenders of ordinary citizens.

The true founder of the ruling line was Giovanni di Bicci, born in 1360. On his deathbed in 1429 he told his sons Cosimo and Lorenzo to be kind to the poor, to avoid party strife and not to draw attention to themselves. The family grew powerful by looking modest.

A fortune built on quiet is the first lesson of the Medici.
