Письма Плиния in short

Letters of Pliny sets a Roman lawyer's life against the changing temper of an empire. Friendship, family and study fill his private pages. Fear under Domitian and relief after him shape the public ones, and the villain Regulus stands for everything that tyranny rewards.

What Письма Плиния is about

A young man of eighteen sits in a courtyard at Misenum, reading Livy while tremors shake the buildings around him. His uncle has sailed toward a burning mountain and has not come back.

Letters of Pliny is the work of Pliny the Younger, a Roman lawyer, senator and magistrate. He chose the first part himself, and the last part holds his letters to the emperor Trajan with the emperor's brief replies. You will meet loyal friends, a hated informer, brave women, a household of slaves, and a governor who asks his emperor about aqueducts and Christians.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy ancient Rome through personal voices will find a friend here. It suits lovers of history, lawyers and writers, and anyone curious about villas, volcanoes and emperors.

Pliny chooses and shapes his own letters

Pliny opens by telling a friend that he has gathered a selection of his letters, not in order of date, but as each one came to hand. So the book is a chosen self portrait, not a diary. Its first reader is meant to be posterity, and Pliny knows it.

Many letters follow a pattern. One event, one person or one question fills a page, and a plain farewell closes it. Each is short, yet polished like a small speech.

Pliny says often that he wants lasting fame. He tells Tacitus that he would like to appear in his histories.

Treat the book as a carefully chosen portrait, and enjoy both its polish and its candor.

Вопросы о книге Письма Плиния

What is Letters of Pliny about?

It is a collection of letters by Pliny the Younger, a Roman lawyer and official. They cover friendship, lawsuits, grief, villas, study, the eruption of Vesuvius, and his questions to the emperor Trajan as governor of Bithynia.

Who was Pliny the Younger?

He was a Roman senator, lawyer and magistrate, nephew and adopted son of Pliny the Elder. He was a friend of Tacitus, served as consul, and later governed a province for Trajan. His letters give a detailed portrait of Roman life.

What does Pliny say about Vesuvius?

Two letters to Tacitus tell of the eruption. The first describes his uncle's voyage and death near Stabiae. The second gives his own account at Misenum, with tremors, ash, and darkness, as he and his mother escape the town on foot.

Are the letters real or written for publication?

They are real letters in origin, but Pliny selected, polished and arranged them himself, hoping to be read by later generations. The final group, his exchange with Trajan, forms an official record of provincial government.

Is Letters of Pliny easy to read?
