Листья травы in short

Leaves of Grass is one long act of welcome. Whitman begins by singing himself, then widens the circle until it holds workers, soldiers, slaves, mothers, strangers and the unborn. He treats the body as holy, friendship as the root of democracy and the open road as a school.

What Листья травы is about

What if a poet walked into a crowd and tried to sing for everyone in it at once? That is the daring move at the start of Leaves of Grass. Walt Whitman opens by announcing that he sings himself, one simple and separate person, yet he speaks for the many.

Leaves of Grass is a gathering of poems that he first published in 1855 and kept adding to for the rest of his life. It grows into a portrait of a young country, its workers, its cities, its war and its mourning. You get the great set pieces, the quiet small poems between them, and a voice that treats death as a doorway.

Для кого. For lovers of poetry that sounds best aloud, for anyone curious about America and democracy, for city walkers who notice crowds and weather, and for readers who enjoy a voice that welcomes them like a friend.

The poet promises one voice for everyone

Whitman opens with a cluster of short poems called Inscriptions, and they work like a doorway. The first claims one simple, separate person who still speaks for the whole mass of people. It insists that the body from head to toe deserves the Muse, and that women are sung as much as men.

In As I Pondered in Silence, a stern ghost of old-world poets tells him that war is the only theme that lasts. He answers that he too sings of war, a larger one fought inside his book, for body and for soul. In Poets to Come, he asks a new generation to justify him, since he only points the way.

I Hear America Singing shows his method in miniature. The carpenter, the mason, the boatman, the mother and the young wife each sing a separate song. Nobody sings for anyone else, and together the songs make a country. Whitman begins by promising one voice that speaks for everybody.
