Путешествие на Запад in short

Journey to the West follows one road on two levels. On the surface, a monk named Tripitaka travels west to fetch scriptures with a monkey, a pig, a river monster and a dragon horse. Demons capture him, Wukong rescues him, and Heaven watches from above.

What Путешествие на Запад is about

What would you do if you could cross 108,000 li in a single somersault, and still could not leave the palm of one hand? That is the trap waiting for Sun Wukong, a monkey born from a stone, in Journey to the West.

Cheng'en Wu, a writer of Ming dynasty China, built it on centuries of storytelling and Buddhist legend. You get a comic adventure, a satire of gods and officials, and a spiritual allegory in one story.

Для кого. This book is for readers who love quest stories, mythology and trickster heroes, and for anyone curious about Chinese religion and humor. If you enjoy clever fights and bickering companions, it is waiting for you.

A stone egg becomes a monkey king

The book opens before history, with the making of the world. On one of four continents, in the kingdom of Aolai, stands Flower-Fruit Mountain.

On its summit lies an immortal stone that soaks up sunlight and moonlight for ages. One day it splits into an egg, and the wind turns the egg into a stone monkey. His eyes flash golden light up to the court of the Jade Emperor, who notes it and thinks little of it. That small neglect will cost him dearly.

The monkey leaps first through a waterfall to win a kingship, and finds a hidden home behind it. The troop crowns him the Handsome Monkey King. Then, at a feast, he weeps, because King Yama, the lord of death, will claim them all. A gibbon says only Buddhas, immortals and sages escape that fate, so the king builds a raft and sails off to find one.

A hero who fears death sets the whole story moving.

How it ends (spoiler)

After many trials, the pilgrims reach the Lingyun crossing, where Tripitaka sheds his mortal body. At Thunderclap they first receive blank scrolls, then pay for the true ones, and a white turtle drops the scriptures in a river. They bring the texts to Chang'an. The Buddha rewards each of them. Tripitaka becomes the Buddha of Sandalwood Merit, Wukong the Victorious Fighting Buddha, Bajie the Altar-Cleaning Messenger, Sha Wujing a Golden-Bodied Arhat, and the horse a Heavenly Dragon.
