Jack and Jill in short
A sledding accident puts a boy and a girl in bed, and their neighbors respond with a telegraph, a Christmas tree and many small kindnesses. As the weeks pass, the two mothers become partners, and the children begin trying to improve themselves. You see how people change by degrees.
What Jack and Jill is about
Do you remember the old rhyme about Jack and Jill going up the hill? In this book, it becomes a bright December afternoon in Harmony Village, with the first good snow and three sledding runs down the hill. On the third run, a cheerful boy and a headstrong girl take a red sled called Thunderbolt. They crash through a fence and tumble onto the road below.
Louisa May Alcott wrote Jack and Jill in 1880, a few years after Little Women, as a village story for young readers. She shows how pain, idleness and kindness shape a group of children over one year, from a winter of broken bones to an autumn of apple picking. Jack Minot is good natured and cannot say no to a girl. Jill Pecq is poor, quick and proud. You meet two mothers, a stern brother who loves steam engines, and nine cats. The first key idea begins on the hill, with a dare.
Для кого. Readers who enjoy cozy village life, warm families, gentle humor, and friendships strengthened by small kindnesses will love this book. It also suits admirers of Little Women.

A dare sends the red sled over
The story opens on the first good snow of the season. Boys and girls race down the hill, and the boys have a rhyme or a nickname for nearly everyone. Then comes Jack on his red sled, all smiles and golden hair. Behind him clings Jill, a little gypsy of a girl with black eyes and a red hood. A boy remarks that Jill goes wherever Jack goes, and he lets her.
Joe Flint says Jill would never dare the bumpy run that ends at the fence. That is enough for her. Jack warns her that the run is rough. He even gives her his red mittens to warm her wet hands. But he cannot say no for long, and after her solo tumble he takes her down once without trouble.
On the third trip they are chatting about the candy pull that night. Jill forgets to hold tight and Jack forgets to steer. They smash through the rails and plunge down the bank, scattering girl, boy, sled, fence and snow across the road. Joe croaks from his post like a raven, Smash up!
Jack has a bleeding cut on his forehead and cannot stand on his left leg. Jill lies still and cannot move her back. Each child blames only themselves. Jack says he should not have let her go. Jill says she made him do it. That is the first sign of real character in both. Mr. Grant, a kindly farmer, carries them home on his ox sled.
A stubborn dare can cost far more than the dare was worth.
