Айвенго in short
Ivanhoe follows a divided England in the absence of its king. Saxons and Normans live side by side without trust, and Prince John tries to turn the quarrel to his own gain. A tournament, an archery match, an ambush and a siege push the characters from open display to hidden danger.
What Айвенго is about
Why does a pig become pork once it reaches a noble's table? Two Saxon servants ask that question in a forest clearing in the opening chapter, and their joke holds the whole book. A conquered people raise the food, and a conquering people eat it.
Ivanhoe is a romance by Walter Scott, published in 1819. He sets it near the end of Richard the Lionheart's reign, when the king is away and his brother John schemes for the crown. Around that crisis he builds a tournament, a siege, outlaws in the greenwood, and a trial that threatens a woman's life.
You will meet a proud Saxon lord, a Templar who breaks his vows, a brave jester, and a Jewish healer whose courage outshines the knights around her.
Для кого. Readers who love tournaments, castles and outlaws, and anyone drawn to stories of loyalty, disguise and honor. If you enjoy bold heroes and a vivid medieval England, this story offers all of it.

Two Saxon servants show how conquest splits language
The story opens in a great forest, while King Richard is held captive abroad and England slides into lawlessness. Four generations after the Conquest, Normans and Saxons still hate one another. The Normans rule, speak French, and hold the castles. The Saxons farm the land and speak the older English tongue.
In a clearing we meet Gurth the swineherd and Wamba the jester. Each wears a metal collar engraved with the name of his master, Cedric of Rotherwood. Gurth is sullen and fierce. Wamba jingles the bells on his cap and cannot keep still.
Wamba's joke makes the point. A living pig keeps its Saxon name, and the same animal on a noble's plate has a French name. Ox becomes beef and calf becomes veal. Gurth agrees bitterly, and he knows that one wrong word to a Norman could leave him hanging from an oak.
Scott begins with a joke about meat because the book is about who owns the land, the words and the table.

- Cedric of Rotherwood A stubborn Saxon lord who clings to the old customs, guards his ward Rowena, and dreams of restoring his people.
- Lady Rowena Cedric's royal-blooded ward, admired by all, who stands by the absent Ivanhoe whatever pressure is placed on her.
- Rebecca Isaac's learned, courageous daughter, a healer who helps a wounded knight and refuses every threat to her honor.
- Isaac of York A Jewish moneylender who survives by cunning and fear while a deep love for his daughter drives his every move.
- Brian de Bois-Guilbert A proud, fearless Templar who wants glory and power, and whose desire for Rebecca tempts him to break his vows.
- Gurth Cedric's swineherd, a bondsman whose steady loyalty to Ivanhoe leads him into danger and toward freedom.
- Wamba Cedric's jester, whose sharp jokes hide courage and who will put his own neck at risk for his master.
How it ends (spoiler)
Rebecca is tried for sorcery before the Templar Grand Master and claims trial by combat. Ivanhoe, still weak, rides in as her champion, and Bois-Guilbert dies unwounded, struck down by his own passions. The Black Knight is King Richard, who ends Prince John's plot. Athelstane, thought dead, returns alive, and Cedric consents to the marriage of Ivanhoe and Rowena. Rebecca thanks Rowena and leaves England with her father for Granada.

Gurth is a Saxon swineherd and Wamba a jester, both bondsmen of Cedric of Rotherwood. They open the book with a famous joke about Saxon and Norman words and stay loyal friends through the adventures that follow.
