Индийские мифы и легенды in short

Mackenzie's book traces the religion and legend of India from storm songs to epic poems. Priests build a world of sacrifice, and forest teachers reach the idea that the soul and the World Soul are one. Later come rebirth, the yugas, the rise of Vishnu, Shiva, and the goddesses, and the tales of the two epics.

What Индийские мифы и легенды is about

What do a storm god with a thunderbolt, a king who gambles away his kingdom, and a wife who follows Death down a forest road have in common? They all live in Indian Myth and Legend, written by Donald A. Mackenzie, who died in 1936. He wrote it to give general readers a clear path into the myths kept in Sanskrit literature.

The route runs in order, from the Vedic hymns through the priestly books to the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. You see how a religion grows from songs about rain into thought about the soul.

Для кого. Readers who love mythology and epic tales will enjoy this book, as will those curious about Hinduism's roots and comparisons between Indian, Greek, Egyptian, and Scandinavian stories.

Sanskrit literature holds the myths of India

Mackenzie begins with the size of the treasure. The myths of India are kept in a vast store of Sanskrit writing, from the Vedic hymns to the prose books, the Forest Books, and the great epics. All of it holds the beliefs, ideals, and memories of a whole people.

The Ramayana and the Mahabharata grew out of popular songs about heroes and were later shaped by priests into sacred books. Hindus treat them as Christians treat the Bible.

Mackenzie also says how to read them. He quotes Robert Louis Stevenson, who said a learner must first think himself into sympathy with the teacher's position. If a saying seems puzzling, the reader may be looking through European eyes.

Listen to these tales as the people who cherish them have heard them.
