Человеческая природа и поведение in short

Dewey builds one argument in four steps. Habits are the working form of human will, and they take shape between a person and an environment. Impulses supply the push that lets habits change.

What Человеческая природа и поведение is about

Why does telling yourself to stand up straight so rarely work? John Dewey uses that small puzzle to build a whole theory of conduct. What we do comes from habits, and habits are shaped not by wishing but by the world around us and the thinking we bring to it.

Human Nature and Conduct grew from three lectures Dewey gave at Stanford in 1918, and the book came out in 1922. He wrote it for readers who want morality to rest on how people actually live. You hear four movements: habit, impulse, intelligence, and a closing view of morality, freedom and society. The first idea is where Dewey starts, with the bad name human nature has long carried.

Для кого. This book suits readers who love ideas about how people change, from teachers and parents to students of psychology, ethics and politics. Dewey tests big claims against everyday scenes, and gives you plenty to use.

Human nature is the material of morality

Dewey begins with a proverb about giving a dog a bad name and then hanging him. Human nature, he says, has been the dog of professional moralists. They treated it as weak and wicked. Yet he asks: if human nature is so hostile to rules, why did humans invent the rules at all?

Morality cut off from human nature produces its own sicknesses. It becomes a list of things not to do, and its common product is bland respectability. Forceful people treat conventional morals as a tool for managing the masses. Romantics praise raw impulse, and sensitive idealists retreat into a private inner world.

The old debate repeats the split. One school says purify hearts and institutions will follow. Another says change the environment and people will follow. Dewey says all conduct is interaction between nature and surroundings, and intelligence can steer it. Respect for human nature, joined to knowledge, is where everything else begins.

Вопросы о книге Человеческая природа и поведение

What is Human Nature and Conduct about?

John Dewey argues that conduct is shaped by habit, impulse and intelligence working together inside a social environment. He uses everyday cases to show that morality should be studied like other human affairs, with attention to causes and consequences.

What does Dewey mean by habit?

For Dewey, a habit is an acquired readiness to respond in certain ways, not just repetition. It is active, shapes desire and thought, and joins a person with the environment. He treats it as the working form of will.

Is Dewey saying human nature can be changed?

Yes, in the sense that he treats human nature as flexible. Impulses can be redirected into many patterns, while customs and habits hold most of the inertia. War and economic systems, he says, come from social arrangements and are not fixed instincts.

What is the main message of Human Nature and Conduct?

Morality grows from understanding how people actually act. Change conditions, use thoughtful deliberation, treat ends and rules as tools to be tested, and find the good in the present meaning of activity rather than a distant ideal.

When was Human Nature and Conduct written and why?

It was published in 1922 and developed from three lectures Dewey delivered at Stanford in 1918 under the West Memorial Foundation, with Human Conduct and Destiny among their topics. He rewrote and expanded the lectures and added an introduction and conclusion.
