Люди-животные in short

Human Animals is a gathering of evidence more than a single argument. Hamel starts from the old belief that spirit is one substance in many forms, and follows it through totems, dances, saints, trials, myths, witches, fairy tales, and ghosts. The same patterns recur everywhere: a skin or ointment that changes the body, a double that feels every wound, and a sign that gives the beast away.

What Люди-животные is about

What would you do if your neighbor could slip out of his skin at night and run as a wolf? Villagers in sixteenth century France believed exactly that, and courts burned people for it. In Human Animals, Frank Hamel gathers hundreds of such cases from every continent.

Hamel wrote in London in 1915. He draws on travelers, missionaries, trial records, fairy tales, and the occultists of his day. He sorts the material by animal and by method, then offers one guess at the end: that thought, driven by will, can shape living forms. You get the stories and the arguments that grew around them.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy folklore, ghost stories, witch trials, and fairy tales will love this book. It rewards anyone curious about werewolves, familiars, and the animal people imagine inside themselves.

The 10 key ideas

  1. Key idea 1 · free to read

People have long believed humans and animals can swap shapes

Hamel opens with a claim about the human mind. The idea of humans becoming beasts, he says, dates to the beginnings of life. It rests on the thought that everything is made of one spirit that takes different outward shapes. If that is true, a change of form is no great leap.

A Cherokee hunter setting out on a winter trip sings that he is a wolf, a fox, or an opossum, then howls and scratches the ground. The animal's frost-proof feet become his own. Hamel reads this as autosuggestion.

Folklore also records methods. Rub the body with ointment, buckle a magic belt, or pull on the animal's skin. A man in one trial said a she-devil gave him a belt, and each time he buckled it he became a wolf. Getting back is just as strange, by taking off the girdle or being called three times by a baptismal name.

The werewolf grows out of a very old view of nature in which no firm wall stands between human and beast.

Вопросы о книге Люди-животные

What is Human Animals by Frank Hamel about?

It collects folklore and reported cases of people turning into animals and animals into people, from werewolf trials and witches' familiars to totems, fox spirits, animal ghosts, and occult theories, all gathered from many countries and eras.

What is lycanthropy in this book?

Hamel uses lycanthropy for the condition of a person who believes he has become a wolf or another beast. He treats it both as folk belief and, in later trials, as a mental illness that judges began to recognize.

What is a bush-soul or tamaniu?

It is a second soul that lives in an animal, such as a lizard, snake, or eel. Hamel reports that in many peoples the animal's life and the person's life are bound together, so harm to one harms the other.

Is Human Animals a true story, and when was it written?

It is a nonfiction collection, not a novel. Hamel dates his preface London, 1915. He reports beliefs, trial records, travelers' accounts, and legends, and he admits that many of them have never been satisfactorily explained.

Is Human Animals easy to read?

Its chapters are short and organized by theme or animal, so you can start almost anywhere. Many tales present a clear incident, sometimes with named people and places, while others follow anonymous figures familiar from folklore.
