Генеалогия семьи Хортон in short

Horton Genealogy tells one story at great breadth. A Puritan named Barnabas Horton settles Southold in 1640, builds a house that holds six generations, and leaves ten children who marry into the founding families. From them, four lines spread from New York to the Pacific coast.

What Генеалогия семьи Хортон is about

Picture a man who carries his own tombstone across the Atlantic. Barnabas Horton, a Puritan from Leicestershire, does exactly that. The slab of English blue marble still lies over his grave in Southold, at the eastern end of Long Island.

Horton Genealogy was gathered by Dr. Geo. F. Horton of Terrytown, Pennsylvania, in the early 1870s. He wrote to cousins across the country and collected their answers. The result lists the descendants of Barnabas generation by generation, with stories, wills and letters along the way.

Для кого. Readers tracing family trees and lovers of local history, early American settlement, Puritan faith and frontier life will enjoy this genealogy. It also appeals to readers drawn to old letters, wills and the journeys of a surname.

Barnabas Horton crosses the sea to Southold

Barnabas Horton opens the family story in America. He was born at the hamlet of Mousely in Leicestershire in 1600. Tradition says he sailed in the middle of the 1630s on the Swallow, a ship commanded by Captain Jeremy Horton.

By 1640 he stands in New Haven, Connecticut, with his wife Mary and their two small sons, Joseph and Benjamin. He is one of a company of Puritans. On October 21, 1640, they form a Congregational church. Then they sail for the eastern end of Long Island, the place now called Southold.

As the boats near the shore, the settlers cast lots to decide who steps out first. The lot falls to Peter Hallock, and the spot is still called Hallock's Landing. Everyone kneels and prays. Barnabas rises quickly in the new town and serves for many years as a magistrate. Most Horton lines in the book start with this Puritan.

What is Horton Genealogy about?

It records the descendants of Barnabas Horton, a Puritan who settled Southold, Long Island, in 1640. Entries run generation by generation, with stories, wills, letters and obituaries added along the way.

Who was Barnabas Horton?

He was an English Puritan born at Mousely in Leicestershire. He settled at Southold in 1640, served as a magistrate, built the first timber-framed house at the eastern end of Long Island, and died in 1680 aged eighty.

What is the old castle in Southold?

It is the house Barnabas began in 1659 and 1660, later extended by his son Jonathan. Six generations of Hortons lived and died there, and the author thinks it is probably the oldest wooden house in America.

When was Horton Genealogy written and is it a true record?

Dr. Geo. F. Horton compiled it in the early 1870s from town records, wills, family Bibles, tombstones and letters from living cousins. Where facts are uncertain, he says so, using words such as perhaps and probably.

Is Horton Genealogy easy to follow?

Entries are short and follow a steady pattern of parents, birth, marriage and children. Lively letters, life sketches, poems and anecdotes break up the lists, so a listener can follow one branch at a time.
